Compensation: 30% du SMIC français ~450€ / month

We are looking for a dynamic intern with a strong interest in West Africa to contribute to the SWAC’s communication activities, in particular the West Africa Observer, a review of West African trends analysed from a regional perspective and the West Africa Gateway (to be launched end March 2011). On the basis of a daily review of various information sources (press, web, radio, etc.), the intern will analyse regional trends in West Africa and produce weekly news briefs which will serve as inputs for the West Africa Observer (next issue scheduled for April 2011). S/he will participate in the production cycle and also provide inputs on specific topics and West African development issues. In addition, the intern will provide assistance to various communication activities of the SWAC Secretariat (newsletter, drafting of information sheets and other communications products, interviews with West African personalities, press relations, network-building, etc.). The tasks will require excellent drafting skills in one of the two official languages of the Organisation (English and French) and very good practical knowledge of the other language.
Key tasks

1. Monitoring and analysis of West African news & trends

 Conduct a daily review of West African news, analyse regional trends and produce weekly news briefs (see samples published on our website: www.oecd.org/swac);
 Contribute/update the SWAC’s regional database and its West Africa Resources Guide with reliable information sources on West African development issues;
 Provide inputs for the updating of the West Africa Gateway, in particular manage the West Africa Events Calendar.

2. Research, analysis and drafting

 Provide inputs for the production of thematic dossiers for the West Africa Gateway;
 Participate in the drafting of summary sheets and other communication products.
 Provide assistance and participate in the production cycle of the West Africa Observer magazine.

3. Network-building & media activities

 Participate in the development of the SWAC’s contact network and the updating of its contact database;
 Help prepare and conduct interviews with West African personalities (www.oecd.org/swac/viewpoints);
 Contribute to the development of relations with specialised media in OECD countries and West Africa.
Qualifications
1. Education and experience
• An advanced university degree (masters level), preferably in communications , journalism, social/political/economic sciences or development studies;
• Practical experience of using information technologies in communications (media, public relations, database management, etc.), within an international context.
• An interest in West Africa and working experience with Africa are essential.

2. Core competences
• Good knowledge of the West African region and its main development challenges ; a strong personal motivation to discover and deepen the understanding of this region;
• Ability to draft clear and concise texts and excellent knowledge of one of the two official languages of the Organisation (English and French); very good practical knowledge of the other language; the knowledge of Portuguese and West African local languages would be an advantage.
• Solid IT skills; Web, database and multimedia skills (Creative Suite, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Premiere) would be a clear asset.
• Proven capacity to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
