Introduction

The European Green Party unites 37 Green member parties and 10 observers in Europe (inside as well as outside the EU) who work together for a bright, green and busy (sustainable?) future. Greens are the only political force with a positive and constructive vision for the future, therefore we foresee a considerable growth for our member parties throughout Europe and we expect Greens all over Europe to take up more responsibilities to govern in coalitions. Due to the fantastic election result in 2009, the European Green Party is able to professionalise further and offer more support for her European and national partners such as common policy and programme development and support for common campaigns. The European Green Party will strongly focus on visibility at the European level as well as strengthen the visibility at the national level by the effective use of the added value of members of the Green family. The European Green Party invests in external contacts and reaches out to civil society in order to broaden the electoral basis.The European Green Party tries to connect more Green minded citizens at European level.

Vacancy for a Media and Communications Officer

To support the above goals we are currently looking for a Media and Communications Officer for the European headquarters of the European Green party. The Media and Communications officer is a senior as regards political communication, and is able to advise the European Green Party in its Communications strategy and policy.

Goal of the function

is to establish and maintain a high level of visibility of the European Green Party by generating

  • media coverage
  • addressing the general public
  • make the media work of the member parties available on European level and vice versa

To achieve this goal the Media and Communications officer should involve all media available. This includes the more classical ones such as press, radio and television, as well as the internet, phone/sms and social media communication tools.

Position within the organisation

The Media and Communications officer works under the responsibility of the Secretary General of the EGP. To profile the EGP s/he liaises on a regular basis with both Spokespersons of the EGP who represent the main faces of the EGP organisation and carry the political responsibility within the organisation.

Job description: duties and responsibilities

The Media and Communications officer is responsible for the media and press work within the organisation. The Media and Communications officer performs as the trusted advisor of the EGP leadership for all communication matters. S/he is able to advise the EGP as well as colleagues within the member parties on media and campaign strategy and action. The Media and Communications officer will enhance the ability of the EGP to reach-out to wider audiences.

On the one hand a strategic advisor, on the other hand a do it yourself when it comes to the day to day practice of external and internal communication. He/she can draft a press release as easily as arrange an interview or put a self-produced video message on the site. S/he has a high level of output and is able to work with the most common programs that are in use in order to be able to communicate effectively through modern means of communication, e.g. internet, e-mail and social media. Most of the EGP communication is internet-based.

The Media and communications officer is a person with a long term perspective and is focused on the goals of the organisation. S/he is able to build and maintain a relevant network (internal and external) that enables him/her to promote the EGP and incorporate the knowledge and experience of others in his/her daily work. The Media and communications officer has a keen eye for developments in his/her field and is eager to explore new developments. S/he can translate green politics into people, images, messages and other means of communication that enhance the profile of the European Green Party.

Criteria for the European Green Party Media and Communications Officer:

  • Has knowledge of the latest development in his/her work field (political communication)
  • Is a generalist and has knowledge of and interest in European and national green politics, parties and people
  • Is able to raise the performance of the EGP website
  • Is able to use modern social media in an intelligent and effective political way
  • Has a toolbox that permits him/her to be active through the modern platforms of communication
  • Is capable of working on a political level with text, images, sound and video on the various platforms
  • Has an excellent working knowledge of the English language
  • Is able to create considerable output with limited means as regards time and support
  • Is able to contribute to the profile and visibility of the European Green Party and its member parties.

General requirements EGP office staff

Since the EGP organisation will remain relatively small in numbers the people in the office are professionals that are highly skilled, motivated and work with a pro-active and responsible work attitude. They can function with a high level of autonomy while keeping in mind the common goal and are able to have an added value when it comes to other work performed in the office. Independence, reliability, and being able to communicate effectively in a multinational organisation are key words. Every functionary must be an excellent networker and have a highly socially intelligent way of interacting. A strong output based focus and prioritisation is essential to create a constructive outcome, since the workload will remain high due to the nature of the growing international organisation.

Practicalities

The European Green Party Media and Communications officer is based at the Brussels office of the EGP organisation. The position is full time (38 hours a week). Flexible working hours as well as regular travel are part of the international working environment. The remuneration is maximum euro 5000 gross per month. Belgian tax and social security system are applicable to the salary.

Procedure

After February 27 the selection Committee, Monica Frassoni, Philippe Lamberts and Jacqueline Cremers, will make a selection based on the criteria and job requirements mentioned above. A first round of interviews is scheduled for March 10 and 11 in Brussels. After this first round, those candidates who are selected for the second round are required to participate in a test. The test will involve testing proficiency in the English language, the style of communication and the creativity in organisation in view of common actions and party profiling, including the use of social media. Part of this test is homework, part is performed at the office.
