Policy Adviser In the field of social inclusion and employment

Who we are

Social Platform is the largest civil society alliance fighting for social justice and participatory democracy in Europe. Consisting of 43 pan-European networks of CSOs (Civil Society Organisations), Social Platform campaigns to ensure that EU policies are developed in partnership with the people they affect, respecting fundamental rights, promoting solidarity and improving lives.

Tasks:

Together with the Director and the Social Platform working groups (attended by policy staff from members’ organisations), you will work to strengthen the capacity of our members to take an active part in key EU processes, as well as developing and implementing the policy strategies and objectives of the Platform. You will also help to implement the communications strategy of Social Platform, together with our communications staff.

As a Social Platform Policy Adviser in the field of social inclusion and employment, you will:

• Work closely with our members on the topics of social inclusion, employment and the EU financial perspectives, to facilitate between different points of view and ensure that a consensus is developed in these areas.

• Draft common positions, letters and other political output in this field, through several rounds of feedback and approval to reach a final document.

• Develop and maintain relations with EU institutions to further the relevant policy objectives described in our work programme, following up on our campaigns and political interactions where relevant. Where appropriate and approved by the Director, represent Social Platform to the EU institutions at external meetings and events.

• Prepare the agenda and supporting documents for our working group meetings on social policy and employment (four times per year); facilitate the meetings, get clear recommendations from members on the way forward, and draft the minutes.

• Track relevant EU policy developments in the field of social inclusion and employment; write concise briefings on these developments to explain them to our members.

• Publish policy content to our website and weekly update; contribute to Platform publications such as ENGAGE and our annual report.

• Support our work on enhancing the civil dialogue between the EU institutions and CSOs– specifically, working on our campaign on civil dialogue.

• Participate actively in internal meetings at the Platform secretariat to improve our strategy and processes.

Person specification:

We’re looking for a candidate with the following criteria gained through three to five years' experience in relevant roles:

Experience

Essential:

• Three to five years’ experience in policy work in social inclusion and employment at EU level, specifically drafting policy papers and common positions.

• Experience in working with the EU institutions, particularly the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council

Desirable:

• Experience in leading a campaign at EU level

• Experience of working in CSOs, particularly membership-based organisations


Competences

Essential:

• Proven facilitation skills with good listening skills, adept at negotiating between different points of view to find a common ground while satisfying the political objectives of the organisation

• In-depth knowledge of EU social inclusion and employment policy, and the functioning of EU institution mechanisms

• Strong representation skills with an ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people and organisations

• Excellent communication skills, particularly in written and spoken English; the ability to express complex concepts simply and concisely

• Knowledge of and commitment to the role and values of Social Platform



Desirable:
• Knowledge on the EU financial perspectives

• Knowledge of other European languages, particularly French or German

The selected candidate should have the ability to relocate to Brussels and travel within Europe

• A permanent contract, with salary range between € 2850 - € 3350 gross per month according to experience
• Holiday allowance and 13th month pay
