VACANCIES FOR SENIOR LEVEL ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS
The University of Ghana invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the senior level administrative positions listed below, which will become vacant on 1st August, 2012.

POSITION (1): Director, Regional Institute for Population Studies.

REPORTING TO: Vice-Chancellor

The Regional Institute for Population Studies was established in 1972. It promotes and strengthens research and training in demography.

The Institute offers MA, MPhil and PhD degree programmes. The Institute organizes seminars, workshops, adhoc courses of study and in-service training in Demography and related fields at the request of governments and institutions.

POSITION (2):
Director, Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies.

REPORTING TO: Vice-Chancellor

The Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies

This new academic unit of the University of Ghana was created in response to several drivers, enablers and outcomes identified as key to the nation’s development at the request of the government of Ghana.

The Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS) will employ interdisciplinary and participatory approaches to train future managers who will contribute to the protection, management and development of the country natural resources in line with the Institute’s mission.

POSITION (3): Director, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

REPORTING TO: Provost, College of Health Sciences

The mandates of the Institute are to (1) conduct research into the major communicable and non-communicable diseases of the tropics, (2) provide training opportunities in medical research for undergraduates and postgraduate students in tertiary institutions and (3) provide high end laboratory diagnostic and monitoring services in support of public health programmes.


POSITION (4): Director, School of Communication Studies.

REPORTING TO: Dean, Faculty of Social Studies

The School of Communication Studies (SCS) was established in 1972 and currently offers two programmes in Communication Studies, namely, Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil).

POSITION (5): Director, Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy

REPORTING TO: Dean, Faculty of Social Studies

The Centre was established in 1989 as an academic unit within the Faculty of Social Studies with a strategic link with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its mission is to meet the nation’s needs for well-trained diplomats, researchers and professional personnel in International Affairs, International Law and International Economics.

The Centre presently hosts the United Nations Training Programme on Peace building and Good Governance for African Civilian Personnel.

POSITION (6): Director, Institute of Agricultural Research

REPORTING TO: Provost, College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences

The Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) comprises the following three Agricultural Research Centres of the University of Ghana:

a) Livestock and Poultry Research Centre, Legon (LIPREC, Legon)
b) Soil and Irrigation Research Centre, Kpong (SIREC, Kpong)
c) Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre, Kade (FOHCREC, Kade)

The IAR consisting of the three Research Centres was reconstituted from the three Agricultural Research Stations (now Centres) and established in May, 2004. The Institute mainly conducts research but also contributes to the teaching and learning of pertinent areas of agricultural science at the University of Ghana. Additionally, the Institute develops agricultural technologies for the various agro-ecological zones of the country as well as trains farmers, extension agents and other stakeholders in the agricultural industry.


POSITION (7): Dean, School of Nursing.

REPORTING TO: Provost, College of Health Sciences

The School of Nursing, established since 2003 currently comprises the following Departments:

Adult Health
Community Health
Maternal & Child Health
Mental Health
Education, Research & Administration


POSITION (8): Dean, School of Pharmacy.

REPORTING TO: Provost, College of Health Sciences

The School of Pharmacy which has been in existence since 2007 has the following Departments:

Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Pharmaceutics and Microbiology
Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine
Pharmacology and Toxicology
Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Pharmacy.


POSITION (9): Dean, School of Allied Health Sciences.

REPORTING TO: Provost, College of Health Sciences

The School has the following Departments:

Medical Laboratory Science
Radiography
Physiotherapy


QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITIONS LISTED ABOVE

(a) Must be of professorial status from an academic/research institution.

(b) Must be capable of providing academic leadership especially in the area of teaching, research and extension in the relevant disciplines.

(c) Must provide evidence of managerial and administrative leadership and capacity to promote a collegial working environment in the School/Institute.

(d) Must demonstrate capacity to attract funding for research and development.

(e) Must have the vision and the drive to oversee the growth and development of the School/Institute.

DUTIES FOR POSITIONS LISTED ABOVE

A Dean/Director is responsible for providing leadership to the School/Institute and for maintaining and promoting the efficiency and good order in accordance with the policies and procedures prescribed by the University Act and Statutes, or as may be determined by the Council, the Academic Board and the School/Institute Board.

The Dean/Director is to ensure that the approved programmes and functions of the School/Institute are duly carried out by members of the School/Institute.

The Dean/Director is also responsible for the general administration of the School/Institute in respect of human, financial and material resources within the general framework of University policy.


TENURE FOR ALL POSITIONS

Three (3) years in the first instance and renewable for another term of up to 3 years.

(ii) An up to date Curriculum Vitae.

(iii) A statement of up to 5-pages indicating how one intends to use the period in office to address relevant issues that will ensure that the University achieves its vision and mission.
