Programme Trainer Fight for Peace International Rio de Janeiro

Fight for Peace International

Programme: Fight for Peace Global Alumni Programme

Position: Programme Trainer

Contract type: Permanent

Location: Rio de Janeiro (Complexo da Maré) with some international travel

Closing date for applications: 5th August 2012

Background
Fight for Peace (FFP) uses boxing and martial arts combined with personal development to support young people living in communities affected by violence. FFP was started in the Complexo da Maré favela in Rio in 2000 in response to the arming and employment of young people by drug factions, and it was replicated in London in 2007 to help combat rising youth gang violence in the UK. FFP’s approach has been consolidated over the 12 years of delivery experience, and today is a comprehensive, holistic service which includes boxing & martial arts, education, job training, mentoring and youth services, and youth leadership (the FFP Five Pillars). Over 6000 young people have been directly supported by FFP since it was founded, and over 2000 young people go through our programmes annually.

In 2011 the FFP Global Alumni Programme was launched to share our methodology with other community based organisations (CBOs) from around the world that work with young people who are involved in or affected by violence. The programme consists of three elements:
• A 6-day intensive training course in the FFP Academy in Rio where CBOs are trained in FFP’s methodology.
• A 12-month remote support package designed specifically for each CBO to help them adapt FFP approaches for their local context, and embed them within their organisations.
• Membership of the FFP Alumni; an online community where CBOs can access on-going support from FFP, connect with peers-organisations around the world, and showcase their work on an international platform to prospective funders and supporters.
Following recent investment in the Global Alumni Programme, FFP will work with 120 CBOs over the next three years to build their capability to deliver effective FFP-like services for young people in their community.

Scaling-up the Global Alumni Programme is a substantial development for FFP. It is a fantastic opportunity for us to support many more organisations, as well as for us to develop our own methodology and continue to lead thinking on how to support young people in communities affected by violence. We need high quality, passionate people to help us make it happen.

Description of the role
There are two full-time Trainers in the team (one is already in-post), and their role is critical to the successful delivery of the programme. The Trainer role has a dual focus: leading the delivery of the FFP Global Alumni Programme to build the capability of trained CBOs; and using the insights and perspective gained through that role to lead internal practice development across the FFP academies. The candidate will be joining a small, highly motivated team that is split between Rio and London, and therefore will also be expected to be a proactive and supportive contributor across the other areas of the programme as this exciting work evolves over time. After an intensive two month induction period, alongside the other trainer the successful applicant will be responsible for:

Delivering the FFP Global Alumni Programme:
• Delivering the 6-day intensive course in Rio, including pre-course support and preparation of the CBOs, and face-to-face co-training of the course itself.
• Delivering the post-course remote support package, providing bespoke one-to-one support to all trained CBOs over a 12-month period via Skype, email and phone.
• Producing additional learning materials through the FFP Alumni website to provide on-going distance learning opportunities for trained CBOs.
• Visiting communities where the programme will focus, to help select the CBOs that will participate.
• Developing the programme on an on-going basis to ensure the materials, curriculum and format remain effective and relevant.
Leading internal practice development across FFP:
• Gathering examples of good practice and insight from the Alumni members that could be used to develop practice at FFP.
• Gathering examples of best practice from within the FFP Academies that can be shared and built on across the FFP group (Academies and Training Programme).
• Providing regular inputs to the FFP Academies to stimulate and improve their delivery.
• Leading special practice development projects to improve specific points of delivery at FFP.
• Delivering and/or supporting internal training to introduce and embed new practices.

General:
• Actively supporting the wider training team across the delivery and management of the Global Alumni Programme, beyond those core responsibilities listed here.
• Delivering any other tasks within the competence of the candidate which may be required
• Fully complying with FFP policies and procedures at all time
• Supporting the aims, objectives and values of the charity and reflect it in all aspects of work.

The candidate must have the following experience / knowledge:
• Led the design and delivery of organisational training programmes, especially programmes that are highly interactive and focus on adapting principles to be relevant in diverse contexts.
• Trained international groups made up of people from different cultures / backgrounds, preferably including low-income communities.
• Delivered ‘capability building’ work, including one-to-one coaching of individuals responsible for driving organisation development.
• Understanding and experience of international development.
• Understanding and experience of small, local organisations working on the ground in communities.
• Confidence in research or insight-gathering that can help to initiate organisational change projects within the FFP Academies.
• The ability to develop new / improve existing organisational practices and approaches, and deliver strategies to embed those changes.
• Fluent Spanish, Portuguese and English to an appropriate standard for delivering training in each language.
• The ability to adapt and be flexible when plans need to change, and to always prioritise the learning and well-being of a group in training.
