Title Statistical Assistant

Contract Type Term contract until 31 December 2012 (Special Service Agreement) with possibility of renewal for a few months.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education Post-secondary education, preferably with completion of
statistical methods or data processing courses.

2. Experience At least five years of relevant professional experience, of which some involved in collection, verification, processing, analyzing, drafting and presentation of statistical data.

3. Language Excellent knowledge of French or English and a good knowledge of the other language. Working knowledge of Spanish would be an asset, as would knowledge of Arabic, Chinese or Russian.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Knowledge of world geography and advanced computer software skills (especially with MS-office, experience in using statistical software is an asset) as well as for data management techniques. Ability to produce tabular and graphic presentation of statistical material. Must enjoy working in a multicultural, dynamic organization and be able to maintain harmonious working relationships. Aptitude for working with numbers, accuracy, meticulousness, organization and initiative.

Nationality Applicants must be either Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada or hold valid work permits to fulfil this contract.
Occupant responsible to Assistant Programme Specialist, Science, Technology and
Innovation (STI)

DUTIES Under the overall administrative authority of the Director of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), the general guidance of senior staff in the context of the Institute teams and under direct supervision of the Assistant Programme Specialist in STI statistics, the incumbent will in particular:
1. Maintain and update the UIS STI statistics databases by:
a. liaising with Data Processing and Standards Unit (DPSU) in carrying out STI statistical surveys, reviewing the data reports, following up with DPSU on feedback received, and finalizing the estimated series; b. extracting STI data from the relevant external partners and liaising with DPSU in importing them into STI statistics databases; c. verifying STI data/indicators and preparing them for the data releases, including updating/processing STI metadata; and d. collaborating with DPSU in the implementation of software tools for data management, by testing, verifying, and proposing modifications and adjustments.

2. Prepare UIS statistical outputs for public releases and inclusion
in official publications as well as for internal purposes by:
a. extracting data and creating tables, maps and graphs; b. writing explanatory notes and other metadata; c. proof-reading and informal translation of texts and statistical tables and graphs (from English to French and French to English); and d. answering data requests from internal and external clients.
3. Support the organisation of workshops and meetings by:
a. managing nominations from participating countries,

arranging logistics and infrastructure; b. writing and making presentations, preparing supporting documentation for bilateral meetings, providing administrative support; and c. summarizing the results of the meetings and posting them
on UIS website.

4. Perform any additional activities that may be required to ensure the success of the work team as assigned or as requested by the supervisor.
