Communications Specialist in Washington, D.C.

Position Description:
 
Alive & Thrive is a foundation-funded project dedicated to reducing death, illness, and malnutrition caused by sub-optimal infant and young child feeding. The program will work to increase rates of exclusive breastfeeding and improve complementary feeding practices in three countries (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Viet Nam), affecting over 16 million children under the age of two years.  The Communications Specialist will provide communications support to the A&T Project for implementation of its dissemination strategy. The job involves writing, editing, publication design, video creation, website management, and dissemination through multiple channels.
 
Take the initiative and provide proactive support in the following:
 
Communication products
  • Prepare and edit content for the project’s electronic newsletter, design and disseminate the newsletter, track its viewers, and update mailing list
  • Create videos using clips and photos for the website and e-newsletter to describe program activities and diffuse learnings
  • Assist in development and production of Tiny Tales video series for the website
  • Assist in the compilation of project documentation, working with technical staff to gather information on project activities and successes and generating content for various media
  • Help prepare creative briefs and concept notes and convert them to products
  • Design or coordinate development of A&T communication products and graphics
 
Web and social media
  • Assume primary responsibility for maintaining the Alive & Thrive website: upload publications, create graphics and images, assess quarterly usage, maintain links, and update content with input from A&T team
  • Explore the potential for social media and identify new channels for communication and ways A&T could use them
 
Internal communications
  • Provide proofreading and copy edit support to A&T technical and communications staff to maintain high quality standards and adherence to project guidelines    
  • Coordinate dissemination of A&T publications and materials; maintain electronic publications files and tracking system; collect IEC materials from A&T country offices
  • Collaborate with the relevant staff to develop materials that provide global access to knowledge products
  • Research programmatic topics by conducting literature review searches, gathering and ordering articles as requested
  • Coordinate with FHI 360 IT and graphic staff that provide services to Alive & Thrive  
 
External communications
  • Prepare displays, materials, and exhibits for information booths and meetings
  • Provide support for partner communications and meetings (develop materials for workshops and other dissemination events, and follow-up communications and deliverables). Be a liaison with external partners in conducting this task.
  • Respond in a timely manner to external requests for publications and information
  • Manage Alive & Thrive publications submissions (publications, tools, peer-review articles, and research reports) and act as liaison to FHI Knowledge Services and online dissemination hubs
 
Other
  • Perform other job-related communications and administrative duties as assigned to ensure the achievement of objectives as outlined in the project’s dissemination strategy
 
 
Minimum Requirements: 
 
  • Bachelor’s degree or its international equivalent, preferably with a focus on communications
  • At least 3 years of experience
  • Experience with graphic design, website content management, video production, copy editing, social media development and production, communications and document management, project administration extremely helpful.
  • Interest in public health and nutrition programs preferred.
  • Excellent organization skills, ability to work independently and under pressure to assess priorities, meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness, and enjoy the challenge of working in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to anticipate project needs and a willingness to assume tasks which may not be reflected in the position description; proven ability to take initiative.
  • Strong computer skills in all MS Office applications particularly Word and PowerPoint. Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, and video editing software preferred. Strong aptitude and willingness to learn computer applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills; ability to interact effectively with a variety of people and in an international and multi-cultural environment.
  • Strong sense of personal responsibility toward excellence in work products.
  • Demonstrated oral, written, and visual communication skills and ability to work effectively with all levels of project staff, other staff, clients, and outside vendors.
  • Proficiency with business machines, including scanner, printer, fax, photocopier, LDC projector, and others
