ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW

Assignment Title: 1087363 - Eastern Caribbean Electrical Grid Interconnection Study

Assignment Countries:
- Barbados
- Grenada
- St. Lucia
- St. Vincent and the Grenadines

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION

The electricity systems in the Caribbean are small, insular, almost completely dependent on oil and vulnerable to oil price volatility. Electricity market integration starting with grid interconnection can offer a range of benefits including: lower electricity costs through market aggregation and economies of scale; increased reliability and resilience of supply; energy security and lower reserve margin requirements. Interconnection can also catalyze the deployment of renewable technologies by connecting islands with renewable energy potential (e.g. geothermal) with larger markets. The World Bank is proposing a feasibility study in the Eastern Caribbean to examine the costs, benefits and commercial viability for electrical grid interconnection involving possibly Barbados, Grenada, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
