Advisor on Sustainable Commodity Value Chains

The Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam is a centre of expertise for sustainable economic development, gender, health care and intercultural communication. We carry out research and provide advisory services and training in order to build and share knowledge on a wide range of development issues. Our focus on both policy and practice is key to our approach to development. We bring experience and translate initiatives from the field to the policy debate and we help bring theory into practice. We navigate and stimulate interactions between global, national and local levels of interventions. 
 
The Sustainable Economic Development and Gender unit aims to improve the performance of organisations and companies pursuing sustainable development in low- and medium income countries (LMIC). Our key areas of expertise include sustainable value chains, food security, gender equity, and agricultural service delivery. Our work comprises organisational performance, impact evaluation, project support facilities, research, documentation and training. To strengthen the team we are looking for an:
Advisor on Sustainable Commodity Value Chains
(average of 38 hours per week)
Main responsibilities
The unit wants to expand its sustainable commodity value chains portfolio and seeks an economist who is specialised in value chain development in low- and medium income countries. Experience with international agribusiness commodity trade is considered an asset. The advisor will have a role in strengthening the performance of the unit in the above mentioned field, e.g. by bringing in new knowledge and expertise, working on product development and conducting acquisition in novel customer markets.
The candidate will be expected to:
  • Provide customers with professional advisory services and conduct short-term missions in the area of sustainable commodity value chain development in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Particular attention will be given to cocoa, coffee and spices.
  • Pro-active networking with private companies and public organizations to engage these in inclusive value chain development in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
  • Develop - in partnership – cutting edge research, methodologies, tools and training material in the area of sustainable value chain development. Document, analyse and publish experiences and results.
  • Acquisition in order to extent our portfolio, in particular in the field of sustainable commodity value chains.

We ask
  • MSc, MA or MBA degree in (agro)economics or related degree or professional training. Preference is given to a PhD degree.
  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience in sustainable economic and/or value chain development, with medium/-long term experience in operating in Africa, Latin-America or Asia
  • Experience in the private sector or enhancing inclusiveness in commodity value chains is considered as an asset.
  • Proven research and writing skills.
  • Excellent skills in presentation, facilitation and intercultural communication.
  • An established network in multilateral organisations, foundations and/or international finance and business networks in LMIC.
  • Clear affinity with the mission of KIT.
  • Fluency in both English, French and/or Portuguese.
  • Team player and a results-oriented attitude.
We offer
The salary, based on age, qualifications and experience, is between €3.428,- and €5.354,- gross per month for a 38-hour working week. In addition, there is an 8% holiday allowance, admission to the KIT pension fund (ABP) and opportunities for training and personal development.
