The opportunity

We are looking for a HSEC Coordinator to provide technical advice to enable project teams to effectively implement HSEC (Health Safety, Environment and Communities) procedures and standards as well as manage and mitigate HSEC risks. You will spend significant time in the field, working in remote locations, to implement and monitor HSEC priorities for specific projects.

Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) is a global operation dedicated to discovering new mineral resources to replace and/or supplement those already mined by the Rio Tinto Group. RTX conducts exploration in both greenfield and brownfield environments, either discovering deposits in new geographical locations or growing and sustaining existing operations.

What the role entails

This role is a great opportunity for someone with proven exploration and HSEC experience to apply their skills to review and monitor HSEC performance, and to initiate improvements. Reporting to the Regional HSEC Manager, you will be:
  • Assisting with the implementation of annual HSEC plans and priorities for the region with a specific focus on translating plans and priorities into HSEC activities at a project level
  • Working with Project Managers and project teams to plan HSEC activities, identify and mitigate risks at a project level as well as establish and implement risk management processes
  • Producing statistics and reports from the HSEC systems to report and monitor results across projects
  • Working with project teams to integrate HSEC requirements and considerations into project plans and activities;
  • Facilitating regular HSEC meetings for operational sites and offices
  • Reviewing project risk registers and management plans to ensure that they meet HSEC standards and requirements
  • Conducting compliance audits and reporting on case management and risk management activities at a project level
  • Assisting project teams to carry out inspections of site, materials and equipment to ensure safe operations
  • Providing coaching and on the job training to project staff
  • Ensuring that contractor practices at a project level comply with Rio Tinto and statutory HSEC standards and requirements                                                                                                                                                       
What you will need for this role

To succeed in this challenging role, you will have:
  • Relevant qualifications in  the HSEC field
  • Demonstrated experience in a HSEC Coordination or Advisor role in an exploration environment
  • Awareness of exploration practices in order to make informed judgments and give sound advice on HSEC issues and practical solutions
  • Willingness to travel to remote and developing areas
