Media & Public Relations Officer

Main responsibilities:

We are looking for an experienced professional to further develop our media profile and successfully publicise all aspects of our work. 

Under the supervision of the Director, you will be responsible for the public relations, media and communications of Social Platform. 

You will create, manage, and implement Public Relations (PR) and media campaigns with the goal of increasing the visibility of the network’s position within the EU institutions and public eye. You will maintain strong relationships with media representatives and be responsible for implementing social media strategies interacting and engaging with users to develop and grow audiences.

You will have a track record of working in journalism or public relations and have an understanding of media processes, ideally for an NGO. You will be adept at developing media strategies, creative features, working with the news agenda and writing stories that secure multimedia coverage.

Key responsibilities include:

Public Relations:

  • Develop PR strategies to raise the visibility of Social Platform;
  • Develop strong relationships with relevant counterparts in key EU institutions;
  • Source and manage speaking opportunities at key European events;
  • Organise and ensure the visibility of events including conferences, exhibitions, etc.

Media:

  • Develop a media strategy to increase the visibility of Social Platform, and analyse media coverage;
  • Write press releases and opinion pieces to targeted media;
  • Ensure Social Platform has strong relationships with key journalists working on EU affairs;
  • Answer press and other enquiries.

Communications:

  • Develop and expand online/social media profiles;
  • Write and edit all types of Social Platform content (e.g. letters, speeches, website content, blogs etc.) to ensure consistent style and tone;
  • Write, edit and coordinate the production of all publications, weekly newsletter, and annual reports, etc.;
  • Develop audio-visual content;
  • Manage the website;
  • Manage Social Platform’s communications’ network (a network of 49 members’ communications officers).

REQUIRED:

  • 4-5 years of experience in Public Relations, Media and Communications;
  • Proven track record of devising and implementing Public Relation strategies and raising visibility of an organisation;
  • Strategic thinker with creative ideas and proactive outlook;
  • Proven track-record of devising media strategies and delivering first-rate media coverage;
  • The ability to develop and evaluate an organisation’s communications strategy and implement change where needed;
  • The ability to simplify information and communicate it effectively to different groups;
  • Extensive experience of managing social media accounts and a good grasp of the various social media platforms available;
  • Established relationships with key media dealing with EU affairs and the confidence and skills to develop more;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with considerable experience of writing press releases, op-eds, letters and other media materials, including for an online audience;
  • Excellent IT skills;
  • Experience of website content management systems (in particular Wordpress) and other communications software (e.g. Mailchimp, picture editing);
  • Publications: experience in designing, producing and editing publications, working with designers/printers/new media tools and knowledge of branding/visual identity;
  • Fluency in English is required.
DESIRABLE: the following would be an advantage:
  • Working knowledge of other European languages, particularly French;
  • Knowledge of the NGO sector and a commitment to Social Platform’s values.

  • The contract: Social Platform offers an employment contract under Belgian law for an indefinite period with 37,5 hours a week;
  • Gross salary: salary between € 2,700 and € 3,000 gross per month according to experience and including a 13th month pay;
  • Remuneration package: hospitalisation insurance, representation allowance, transport allowance, lunch vouchers, Pension scheme after 6 months and additional two weeks of conventional holidays.

Date of interview: Tuesday, July 29th 

Start of the Contract: Preferably on September 1st 

If called for interview, you will be asked to bring with you samples of your work, such as successful Public Relations actions, writing examples, communication material you’ve developed, and media coverage you have generated.
