The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is an intergovernmental treaty aiming to conserve terrestrial, marine and avian migratory species throughout their migratory range. The Convention Secretariat is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Convention Secretariat’s Abu Dhabi duty station. CMS Office – Abu Dhabi coordinates two international agreements under the Convention’s framework: the CMS Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU) and the CMS MoU on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats throughout their Range (Dugong MoU).

Education
Advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in zoology, ecology, environmental studies, and/or a related scientific field related to marine species conservation and management. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive work experience in the field of marine biodiversity conservation with a national and/or international institution(s) or the private sector is needed to successfully carry out the duties required. Expert knowledge on dugong biology and the development of dugong conservation projects in international settings is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. English is the working language of the CMS Office - Abu Dhabi. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Good working knowledge of French or Arabic is desirable.
