TITLE: Lead Organizer, Extractive Industries
REPORTS TO: Organizing and Alliances Manager
LOCATION: Washington, DC
COORDINATES WITH: Extractive Industries Program Manager and team; Organizing and Alliances staff; Policy & Communications staff; regional staff and partner organizations; allied organizations and networks; Oxfam International colleagues; volunteers and interns
PURPOSE OF POSITION: To lead and expand Oxfam America’s organizing and alliances activity in support of responsible extractive industries (oil, gas and mining) campaigning; strengthen Oxfam America’s extractive industries program and campaigning capacity; and to recruit, cultivate and support a large and growing constituency in support of Oxfam America’s mission and campaigns
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead and expand Oxfam America outreach and organizing efforts in support of responsible extractive industries (oil, gas and mining) activity
• Increase awareness of human rights impacts of oil, gas and mining activity, using grassroots marketing and communications strategies to cultivate individuals and groups
• Lead US-based organizing and popular mobilization efforts in relation to Oxfam’s oil, gas and mining campaigning
• Serve as primary contact to allied organizations, networks, student groups and other citizen and grassroots advocates seeking to engage with Oxfam’s extractive industry initiatives
• Develop and present training to provide in-depth understanding of relevant issues and to build skills in organizing, advocacy, strategy development, and coalition building
• Provide specific support and leadership to Oxfam’s student training initiatives. Recruit participants, prepare curricula, deliver training, and provide ongoing mentoring and support
• Assist in planning and development of public campaigning materials, including publications, web tools, web content, and e-actions
• Write content for internal and external newsletters
• Identify opportunities to involve and develop Oxfam’s extractive industries constituency
• Identify and carry out opportunities to mobilize other constituencies that influence campaign targets (consumer groups, environmental groups, mining professionals, etc.)
Strengthen Oxfam America’s extractive industries program and campaigning capacity
• Serve as core member of Extractive Industries team; working closely with Extractive Industries Program Manager and team in the development of global and national strategic and tactical campaign plans
• Maintain relationships with Oxfam America regional offices and partner organizations engaged with the Extractive Industries program; support development of regional campaign plans
Grow and support Oxfam America’s constituency of concerned Americans working to advance Oxfam’s mission and campaign priorities
• Serve as member of Organizing and Alliances staff, conducting general outreach, public speaking, panel presentations, tabling, and other duties as assigned.
• Implement strategies to grow Oxfam America’s constituency of high level activists, using evaluation and tracking systems, including the Constituent Relationship Management system
• Project manage specific outreach and organizing drives
• Recruit, manage and mentor interns and temporary employees to cover administrative organizing tasks, including conferences, film screenings, and mailings.
• Share learning and best practices within agency
• Respond in positive fashion to unexpected and urgent needs
• Perform other reasonably related duties as required
EXPECTATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
• The incumbent will stay abreast of professional standards, trends and issues affecting this set of responsibilities, demonstrating continuous learning of the field.
• S/he will work effectively and collaboratively in support of building a team-based culture of work, will perform all duties appropriately for a multi-cultural environment, treating all persons with dignity and respect, and will be familiar with and committed to Oxfam America mission and goals.
• Must be able to travel internationally and domestically in support of work (est. three to six weeks/year); some evening work may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, or related field.
Experience:
• Minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in public issue awareness or grassroots organizing.
• Knowledge of human rights and international development
• Public speaking experience and experience conducting trainings
• Experience working with volunteers and interns
• Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work under pressure
• Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
• Demonstrated proficiency with the applications in Microsoft Office
Preferred:
• Knowledge of impacts of oil, gas and mining extraction on developing countries.
• Experience living, working, or studying in a developing country
• Spanish and/or French fluency
