Malawi Empower Logistics Officer

Malawi - Based in Lilongwe with regular travel throughout the country

For this post we are only able to consider applicants who are fluent in English and Chichewa (or another key Malawian language)

Progressio is looking for a resourceful, hands on and people-orientated individual, with an excellent knowledge of Malawi, who is looking for a challenging new role.

You will be responsible for the logistical arrangements and act as the liaison between the groups of volunteers of the Empower project, Progressio and the local Malawian organisations hosting the volunteers. The successful candidate will ensure that UK volunteers receive the support needed in order to successfully make a positive contribution to their placement, during a 10 week stay in Malawi.

This post requires a confident and outgoing professional, with strong personal initiative, who can manage a demanding workload and communicate well with a wide range of people, particularly with young adults.

The post holder will have a degree and/or relevant qualification. S/he should have demonstrable experience in logistics or working in a similar role, meeting a wide range of requests; experience in the procurement of services; of working with budgets and tracking expenditure; of a flexible approach to managing and prioritising a high workload and multiple tasks in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines. As well as, experience of proactively identifying and addressing issues/problems and of working with people of other cultures, backgrounds and ages.

A good knowledge and understanding of Malawian culture and society; excellent attention to detail, accuracy and proven analytical and problem solving skills, the ability to organise own workload and work with minimum supervision; ability to approach work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude; and demonstrable interpersonal and negotiation skills, including the ability to work with and build effective relationships with individuals/groups from different cultural backgrounds and ages are essential. S/he should also have the ability to adapt within the working environment, cope with changing circumstances, including the ability to travel extensively, sometimes at short notice; good computer and numeracy skills; full employment rights in Malawi; sensitivity to culture, gender, religion, race, nationality and age; driving licence, and the willingness and ability to work outside office hours and during weekends.

Tour Guide background and/or experience of coordinating logistics for the implementation of a development programme with international volunteers; experience of working and engaging with young adults; knowledge of logistics systems, procedures and practices, and an interest in or an understanding of international development issues are highly desirable.
