The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a New Partnership Worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.

In seeking to achieve this objective, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the implementation of its organizational structure and the filling of all vacant posts.

JOB TITLE: Senior Policy Officer
(Support to the meetings and other activities of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC))
GRADE: P3
NUMBER OF POSTS: Two (2)
DEPARTEMENT: Office of the Secretary to the Commission
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Head of Unit, PRC Support Unit
DUTY STATION: Addis Ababa


2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION

Assisting the Head of the Unit, under the overall supervision of the Secretary to the Commission, to provide adequate support and documentation to the meetings and other activities of the PRC and its Sub-Committees and to serve as a Secretariat to the PRC and as well to ensure follow up and reporting on the preparation and implementation of their Recommendations.

3. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Ensure the provision of administrative and logistic support for the meetings and other activities of the PRC and its Sub-Committees, in coordination with relevant Focal Departments, and also to other decision – making organs of the AU as may be required;

- Ensure the exchange of information between the Commission, on the one hand, and the PRC and its Sub-Committees on the other, regarding their respective activities;

- Follow up on activities of PRC Sub-Committees, in close coordination with Focal Departments for these Sub-Committees, and report thereon on a regular basis;

- Perform any other relevant duties within the Office of the Secretary to the Commission, as may be assigned.

4. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION :

Candidates must have a Master’s Degree or equivalent qualification in any of the areas of competence of the Union, especially in Management, Business Administration, Political Science or in relevant Social Sciences;

5. WORK EXPERIENCE:

Candidates must have at least eight (8) years of work experience in national, regional or international Organization. Work experience in and/or exposure to the work of a regional or international institution for regional integration or diplomacy would be an added advantage;

6. OTHER SKILLS :

- Computer literacy;

- Excellent Drafting and Reporting Skills;

- Excellent Planning, Monitoring Skills;

- Negotiating and Diplomatic Skills.


7. Language Requirement:

Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages is a requirement; Knowledge of one or more of the other AU working languages would be an added advantage.

8. Age requirement:

Candidates must preferably be between 30 and 45 years old.

10. Tenure of Appointment:

The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.

12. REMUNERATION:

Indicative basic salary of US$33,619.00 per annum plus other related entitlements- e.g. Post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance ($14, 414.40 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the commission.
