The Hariri Center for the Middle East of the Atlantic Council of the United States seeks a talented, entrepreneurial, experienced Deputy Director. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Director in establishing and managing the broad mission and programs of the Atlantic Council's new Hariri Center.

The Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East seeks to produce original analysis of the forces transforming the region, as well as policy recommendations for the United States and Europe about how to promote closer and more productive relations with the region. The Hariri Center recognizes the substantial linkages between political and economic affairs, and will develop policy initiatives to promote successful democratic transitions and greater convergence among the Middle East, the United States, and Europe. The Center is dedicated to the memory of the late Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and his efforts to rise above sectarianism and to promote innovative policies to support economic and political liberalization, sustainable conflict resolution, and greater regional and international integration.

The successful candidate for this position will have a strong background in Middle East and North Africa issues as well as outstanding writing, organizational, and diplomatic skills. A proven track record of managing programs in Washington DC and in the region is also particularly welcome. Ability to read and speak Arabic is essential; ability to read and speak French is a strong plus.

The Deputy Director will have his/her own research interests and be able to carry out independent policy initiatives and writing projects; to represent the Director as needed at high levels of Middle East, U.S. and European governments; to think creatively about Middle East and North Africa issues and contribute to the design of programs; and to excel at communication and collaboration within the Council and externally.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning: Work with the director to develop the strategic vision for this new center.
  • Project Management: Undertake all aspects of specific project development and implementation.
  • Publications: Research, write and/or edit materials for publication, including writing and editing reports, event summaries, website content, etc.
  • Resource Management: Manage center funding (grants and other contributions), produce and manage project budgets.
  • Human Resources: Manage Center staff, especially interns.
  • Outreach/Communication: Represent the Center externally and internally, represent the Director as needed.

Qualification:
  • Master's degree in a relevant field; four to eight years work experience preferred.
  • Experience in Middle East or North Africa work within the government, private sector, NGOs, or academia.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; must be able to write quickly, under time constraints.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills; must be able to juggle multiple tasks.
  • Excellent people skills; must be able to manage interns and research assistant, and work well with colleagues, senior Council staff, and external officials and partners.
  • Foreign languages; must be able to read and to speak Arabic. Ability to read and speak French highly desired. Ability to write in Arabic or French a plus.
