Director of Fundraising and Communications

Mama Cash is seeking a visionary leader and exceptional manager with a passion for making a difference in the human rights of women and girls globally. The Director of Fundraising and Communications provides leadership, strategic direction, oversight, coordination and priority setting for the Fundraising and Communications teamto sustain and expand funding for Mama Cash, build our profile and increase our visibility, stimulate other donors to become supporters of women's movements, and facilitate learning between our partners. The Director of Fundraising and Communications works as part of the Management Team to provide guidance and leadership for the organisation as a whole.

We are looking for an exceptional professional with a minimum of 5 years in a senior management position—someone with strong staff management experience and the "people skills" to inspire, motivate and challenge the Fundraising and Communications team. Additionally we seek someone with significant working knowledge of the non-profit sector, in particular fundraising and communications. The successful candidate has excellent written and oral communications skills in English (Dutch proficiency is desirable) and a demonstrated commitment to rights based approaches and to women's rights.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Team Leadership, Management, and Supervision

- Oversees and manages a Fundraising and Communications team of ten, ensuring that staff has the necessary tools and training to do its work;

- Supervises three senior staff members directly;

- Provides overall direction and priority setting for the team;

- Seeks ways to professionalize and systematize the work of the team to be more responsive, effective and efficient.

Vision, Strategic Thinking, and New Initiatives

- Leads the implementation of strategies to achieve fundraising and communications goals as laid out in the 2009-2013 strategic plan;

- Facilitates the preparation of the fundraising and communications annual plan and writes other strategic planning documents as needed;

- Oversees implementation of annual plans;

- Initiates, advances and oversees special fundraising projects and ensures that they are consistent with our values and our internal capacity.

Sustaining and Increasing Funds

- Expands and diversifies strategies to identify, educate, involve and cultivate existing and prospective donors (institutional and individual);

- May provide conceptual feedback and input for important proposals and reports;

- Develops and maintains relationships with and solicits major individual and institutional donors;

- Conducts donor acknowledgment as needed;

- Represents Mama Cash at donor and prospect donor gatherings.

Financial Planning & Management

- Develops annual budget with participation of team members and in conjunction with the Management team;

- Monitors Fundraising and Communications team budget;

- Reviews monthly financial statements and facilitates reconciliation of donor gifts between Finance and Fundraising data systems.

Advisors and Board Relations

- Reports in a timely and regular manner to the Board of Directors, and facilitates its engagement in fundraising and communications;

- Oversees the work of possible future fundraising advisory committees, coordinates the selection of new advisors, and plays a lead role in developing new advisory structures if necessary.

Communications, Public Education and Representation

- Plays a management and coordinating role for communications staff and consultants, ensuring cohesiveness with development activities and other teams;

- Gives public presentations when appropriate and represents Mama Cash at selected conferences;

- Participates in affinity groups and membership organisations related to fundraising and communications.

Organisational Leadership and Management

- Helps to establish long-term strategic direction alongside the Board;

- Models effective leadership to all Mama Cash staff and promotes the organizational vision and values to all employees, serving as a role model for a culture of performance, accountability, transparency and innovation;

- Ensures that all teams are working for organisational coherence;

- Makes viable organisation-wide strategic and operational decisions.

ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal Relationships

- Meets as needed with the Executive Director, and works closely on matters related to fundraising, donor relations, communications, influencing philanthropy (Mama Cash's work to influence the European philanthropic sector to expand and deepen its funding of women's and girls' rights), special projects, and organisation-wide management issues;

- Works closely with the Director of Programmes to review programmatic goals, plan fundraising and communications initiatives, and design special programmes;

- Works closely with the Director of Finance & Operations to develop and monitor the annual budget;

- Serves on the Management Team;

- Directly supervises three fundraising and communications staff.

External Relationships

- Represents Mama Cash at selected conferences and gatherings;

- May represent the organisation as a member of different affinity groups and networks;

- Conducts public speaking in a variety of venues;

- Key contact for major individual and institutional donors.

Required

- Believe passionately in Mama Cash's mission, vision and values;

- Excellent leadership, management, and supervisory skills;

- Commitment to and understanding of women's human rights and ability to clearly communicate Mama Cash's work and vision;

- Strong strategy thinking and planning skills in developing fundraising and communications strategies;

- Track record as a senior fundraising professional (ideally not only in direct marketing);

- Experience managing a communications function;

- Knowledge of IT and new media for communications and fundraising;

- Able to engage respectfully with people who have different values and styles and be at ease with people of wealth;

- Strong sensitivity and commitment to cultural, racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity;

- Strong writing skills;

- Good public speaking skills;

- Able to lead and engage in planning processes and set priorities;

- Able to interpret vision and values;

- Able to think critically and analytically;

- Strong knowledge of budgeting;

- Able to work under pressure and keep a good sense of humour;

- Willingness to travel (in the Netherlands and internationally);

- English fluency required (written and oral), Dutch desirable.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

- Minimum of 5 years experience in a senior management position;

- Minimum of 5 years experience in a fundraising and/or communications leadership role;

- University degree in relevant field: Human Rights, Social Sciences, International Development, Women's Studies, Marketing and Communications;

- Proven experience in the full spectrum of fundraising;

- Demonstrated success at developing and implementing strategic fundraising and communications plans and closing major gifts from individuals and institutions.
