The Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a regular, tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank, effective August 2012, specializing in one of the following areas: Applied Linguistics, Foreign Language Education, Sociolinguistics, or related disciplines.

The successful candidate will teach courses in Somali at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as conversation courses in the language. Native or near native command of Somali is expected. Particular attention will be given to candidates who can teach both Somali and Swahili, and whose research focuses on language and identity, language and power, language and migration, bilingualism, and issues related to transnational migration. Successful candidates will be expected to teach four courses per year at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and develop new interdisciplinary and advanced courses in language, society, and culture. In addition, the candidate will also be expected to direct a study abroad program to East Africa. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of application.
