Research Fellow/Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the leading authority on global security and defence, intends to appoint a Research Fellow/Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia. The appointment may be taken up at the Institute’s London Headquarters or at the IISS-US office in Washington DC.

The Institute conducts research on the problems of conflict, however caused, that may have a significant military dimension, and also analyses international trends, including financial and economic developments, which may have strategic implications. It convenes high-level conferences that bring together government officials, business leaders and opinion-formers at the most senior level, in order to enhance diplomatic exchanges and to enable the crafting of more effective public policy on strategic matters.

The Research Fellow/Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia will work with the Director of Studies and other members of the IISS Directing Staff to further develop the Institute’s well-established Russia and Eurasia Programme, producing compelling analysis and conferences on a wide range of security, defence and other policy questions affecting the Russia and Eurasia region and its key international interlocutors. The ideal candidate would hold a doctorate in international affairs or a related discipline, have a strong publications record, experience of working in a policy-focused or governmental environment, and possess a proven capacity for successful fundraising and effective research management. Key skills will include excellent writing and presentational abilities in English, as well as in Russian or another key regional language; a demonstrable expert knowledge of Russian and Eurasian policy issues widely defined; and an entrepreneurial approach to research production and management. The post holder will be expected to travel in the region and elsewhere to develop research and policy networks, represent the IISS at conferences and raise funds.

Salary will reflect experience. The IISS provides a full employment package.

Candidates should send a letter explaining the skills they would bring to the post, and enclosing a CV, to graham@iiss.org

Deadline for receipt of applications is 6 February 2012
