Europe Project Director RUSI

Royal United Services Institute

London, United Kingdom

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow/Research Fellow as Project Director to play the leading role in developing its newly-established European Futures, initiative a new project for advancing understanding of Europe and the European Union and consideration of its future developments in light of the deepening crisis in Europe.

About the Project

The Project is launched by RUSI on the assumption that current European financial and political crises may change the continent in fundamental and irreversible ways. Its purpose is to consider what those ‘futures’ may look like, the implications for policy, and to promote a debate on which approaches might best serve the nations of Europe. While economic considerations are crucial, RUSI intends to bring wider security elements to the debate, presented from a pan-European perspective, avoiding either ‘Euro-sceptic’ or ‘Euro-enthusiast’ simplifications.
The Project consists of several strands: original and academically rigorous research, regular polling of European opinions on European and EU developments, as well as management of our network of high-level strategic thinkers, with continent-wide summits and conferences, and innovative public engagement events.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of International Security Studies, as well as the Director of the Institute and a small research team and must therefore possess management skills.
He/she will have extensive experience in the initiation and delivery of innovative research, will be educated to a post-graduate level, be thoroughly conversant with the history and politics of Europe, including the European Union and have published in the general subject area.
The candidate will have experience in arranging and leading seminars, presenting at conferences and debating on subjects across a range of European issues. In addition, they will be a confident media presenter and capable of engaging a range of audiences.
In order to lead the academic debate the candidate must be equally capable of establishing close working relationships with members of a ‘blue-ribbon’ group of high-profile thinkers. Similarly, although the Project is sponsored, the candidate will be expected to develop relations with potential sponsors in order to generate additional funding and help sustain and expand the Project in future years.
Excellent knowledge of both written and spoken English is a requirement and knowledge of other European languages an asset. The post will be located in London, although applications from other countries are encouraged.
There is no pre-requisite political affiliation the Project aims to facilitate an open discussion on the future of Europe, rather than promote any particular agenda.

Is it you?

This is a post with significant scope for personal development and considerable autonomy pro-actively to expand the scope and activities of the Project.
It is an ideal opportunity for any ambitious candidate possessing an enthusiasm for working with a young, active team and contributing across a range of RUSI’s activities, and the intent to enhance both their own and the Institute’s reputation for leadership in issues of strategic importance in both the UK and Europe.
