European Free Trade Association Economic Officer – SGO Geneva


The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organisation set up for the promotion of free trade and economic integration to the benefit of its four Member States; Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The Geneva office of the EFTA Secretariat supports the EFTA Council and supplies services related to free trade and cooperation instruments with countries outside the European Union, and its Brussels office assists in managing the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement.

Scope

The Secretary-General’s Office of 9 staff members is part of the EFTA Headquarters in Geneva. It services the EFTA Council and coordinates various horizontal activities in the Association. 
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake economic and trade policy analysis, including to produce quantitative and qualitative reports in support of trade-related activities; process data from internal and external sources; maintain the organisation's trade data; draft publications and presentations; manage collaboration with international economic organisations on trade issues; and carry out other related duties as required. 
The successful applicant may also be assigned other tasks in the Secretariat.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent in international trade or economics with excellent knowledge of statistical analysis and macro-economics.

Experience

  • Several years of relevant work experience with economic analysis, preferably in a national body or administration, or an international organisation;
  • Proven exposure to international trade; 
  • Experience in compiling, analysing and applying trade statistics.

Skills

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong organisational skills and initiative, self-reliance and responsibility; 
  • Service-mindedness and an ability to work constructively in an international team; 
  • Capability to write analytical reports, policy papers and correspondence in English, and an ability to meet deadlines; 
  • Proficiency in Excel.

Languages

  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Knowledge of French and other EU or EFTA languages would be an asset.

Employment Terms

Grade: A4/1 
Annual salary: CHF 163’705 

Appointments are normally made at the first step of the grade. The Secretary-General reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a level different from that advertised.
