The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) seeks a Deputy Director General for Global Programs 

The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) is seeking a seasoned, entrepreneurial leader for the newly created position of Deputy Director General for Global Programs. Reporting to the Director General, the Deputy DG for Global Programs will serve as the #2 leader in the organizational structure and will be responsible for all aspects of IDLO’s global programs portfolio. 

IDLO is the only intergovernmental organization with an exclusive mandate to promote the rule of law. It offers legal technical assistance and capacity development support to governments, multilateral partners, and civil society organizations, and carries out research and advocacy at national and international levels. A pioneer in the field of rule of law, it has considerable expertise in justice sector development, especially in countries emerging from conflict, and legal and regulatory reform to promote economic and social development. The organization prides itself on its flexibility, speed, and entrepreneurial spirit. 

Headquartered in Rome, with a liaison office for the United Nations in New York, IDLO has program offices in Afghanistan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Sudan, and Somalia (based in Nairobi). The organization is governed by 26 Member States and one multilateral organization, and also benefits from the collective wisdom of a prestigious International Advisory Council. 

Going forward, IDLO has ambitious growth plans. Under the leadership of the Director General who took up her position in 2012, a four-year strategic plan is currently being finalized that will expand the depth and breadth of its global programs, research and advocacy, and seek to further enhance the position of the organization as a thought leader, partner of choice, and center of excellence for rule of law assistance. 

The Ideal Candidate 
The ideal candidate will be a strategic and entrepreneurial leader committed to IDLO’s mission and to the rule of law. S/he will have extensive international development experience, and preferably also legal expertise, and proven skills in change management, including growing and managing successful programs in high-risk environments. The successful candidate will be a compelling communicator and creative thinker, who will work to further enhance IDLO’s reputation as a key player in the rule of law assistance sector. This incoming Deputy DG for Global Programs will be highly networked and will be able to successfully focus both internally and externally to drive international program development and delivery. The candidate will have the necessary gravitas to be able to work with governments, donors, partners, and other stakeholders at a senior level. 

Additional Key Skills/Experience 
The candidate should have a minimum of 15 years related work experience in relevant positions of increasing scope and responsibility. S/he must possess excellent people skills, integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to IDLO’s mission. Substantial leadership experience working for a multilateral organization, the United Nations, international NGO, or bilateral organization/ company in a similar capacity is highly desired. An advanced degree in law, development, international relations, or a related field is required. Fluency in English is essential. A working knowledge of French is highly desirable.
