Job Summary

Working closely with the Tokyo partners and the Head of MBD, the Marketing and Business Development Manager, Tokyo will develop a thorough understanding of the business and overall strategic objectives of the office in Tokyo and will contribute to the formulation and execution of the office’s business plan.

Providing both strategic and tactical input, the MBD Manager will be responsible for the design and execution of a detailed business development plan to support the office’s objectives and business strategy and actively support the implementation of the plan.

The MBD Manager will also be responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of client relationship strategy for the Practice Group’s priority clients and targets.

Key Responsibilities

 
Business Planning
·         Contribute to the formulation of the business plan for Japan: overseeing research and analysis on relevant internal/external data, competitors, and on specific markets or trends and working with MBD teams in central MBD and in the global practice.
·         Translate the Japan business plan objectives into detailed business development and communications plans that support the practice area and its product groups. This will involve regular active review of partner requirements and priorities.
·         Prompt partners and other fee earners to achieve results, and regularly monitor progress against the plan.
Target and client development
·         Help design, implement and support a focused approach to the creation, development or extension of core client and target relationships
 
·         Identify among office key relationships cross-selling opportunities for other offices or groups; facilitate communication and support of those opportunities. Follow up on cross-selling opportunities transferred into the practice areas from other PGs or offices firm wide.
New Business Development
 ·         Provide input to pitching decisions and draft major pitches in line with partner requirements. Monitor quality control of content and format of all pitches on a regular basis. Oversee logging of all pitches and solicit and record outcome together with any feedback.
·         Monitor and contribute to the production of pitches, providing guidance on shaping messages.
·         Contribute to developing (where appropriate) and overseeing a BD Executive, also based in Japan, in updating and maintaining pitch support material for the office (including deal lists, standard materials and CVs).
·         Research referral sources for new business (e.g. client influencers).
Marketing and Communications
 ·       Promoting market awareness
·       Client education/ thought leadership
·       Rankings, awards and directories
·       Internal communications and training
Budgeting
·         Provide input to the production of the annual marketing budget for the Tokyo office, liaising with Marketing & Business Development Managers in other relevant offices if required. Monitor costs against budget regularly.  

Experience and Qualifications

• Degree educated, preferably in marketing/business, economics or law.
• At least 5 years’ experience in business development in a professional services firm.
• Experience of legal services and relevant practice highly preferred.
• Experience of working in an international context in roles that require buy-in and engagement of senior management or partners.
• Experience of relationship management and winning new business (either active involvement or supporting others to do it, i.e. in a way which is a relevant to selling services and building propositions around products/services).
• Proven track record of project management and delivering against objectives.
• Japanese written and spoken language skills and direct experience of the Japanese legal market preferred but not essential.
