WWF Regional Business and Industry Coordinator

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of the largest independent conservation organizations in the world. The global conservation organization, active in almost 100 countries, has been working in the Congo Basin in Central Africa for more than 20 years. The WWF Central Africa Regional Programme Office (CARPO) is looking for a Regional Business and Industry Coordinator to ensure the effective development, implementation and monitoring of the regional and national business and industry / extractive industries components of the Strategic Plan of WWF Central Africa Regional Programme Office (WWF CARPO).

As an integral part of one of the four strategies of WWF regional Strategic Plan, namely “advancing a green economy for the Congo Basin”, this position is embedded in the regional team providing strategic support to national and field staff working on extractive industries.

Duration:

Two years, renewable.

Main responsibilities:

Reporting to the Regional Conservation Director, the Regional Business and Industry Coordinator’s major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Develops and implements a WWF’s Non-Renewable Extractive Industries Program in Central Africa and for establishes the capacity of WWF CARPO staff in this area of competence, with a special focus on Gabon, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
  • Supports coordination of, as far as the Congo Basin is concerned, all WWF initiatives related to Extractive Industries; provides technical support to the extractives officers of WWF country programmes in Gabon, Cameroon and DRC;
  • Supports the promotion, development and strengthening of relationships at senior levels with key institutions and mining, oil and gas companies operating in the region, as well as NGOs – local and international – that are active in this sector, with a view to promoting the integration of environmental and social objectives into economic development programs;
  • Supports the Governments of the region and their partners in establishing fora for sharing best practices, organizing training sessions and promoting education and awareness raising among key stakeholders on the environmental and social impact of mining, oil and gas projects, and on the local economic promise of mining, oil and gas projects that are conducted in an environmentally and socially responsible way;


What you need:

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced university degree in an appropriate field (conservation / environment / natural resource management / law / policy). Additional academic training in Environmental Impact Assessment and/or in Land Use Planning would be a strong asset;
  • Well-established track record (minimum 6 years) in managing donor-funded development projects and/or private sector extractive industry operations
  • Experience/technical knowledge of environmental and social issues associated with mining, oil and gas projects;
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of national, regional and international environmental laws and standards relevant to the mining, oil and gas sectors in the region;
  • Working knowledge of conservation planning and diverse conservation issues;
  • Familiarity with funding agencies -bilateral and multilateral-, and other donors

  • Proven leadership and team management skills;
  • Strong skills in project planning, proposal writing, financing, management, implementation, and evaluation, and experience working with donors;
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills;
  • Adaptable and good at problem solving;
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, with the ability to network and to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels, both internally and with local communities, government agencies, the not-for-profit sector, the scientific community, the business community, and the WWF Network;
  • Strong interest and commitment to nature conservation, sustainable natural resource management, and improved well-being of local people
  • Demonstrated track record of cross-cultural and cross-sector mediation (e.g. environment, mining/oil and gas; NGO, private sector, government, donor community);
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Fluency in French and English.
