Assistant Investigator/Analysis

OVERALL DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the Project Leader and Analysis Mentor, the incumbent performs a variety of investigative, analysis and research projects related to the overall objectives of the organization, with a particular focus on Sexual and Gender Based Violence cases occurring in the ongoing Syrian conflict. This will include, but not limited to, assisting in the collection, assessment, compilation and presentation of information and analysis product from a variety of sources; assisting in preparing case files and summaries, reports, spread sheets, charts, maps, diagrams and graphs; and performing a variety of specialized studies as assigned.
Please note that this a temporary assignment of 4 months.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Analysis Mentor the incumbent will:
  • Assist in the systematic review and evaluation of large collections of English and Arabic language documentation and reports
  • Conduct open source research as tasked
  • Perform related field duties and other analytical tasks relating to Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the Syrian conflict
  • Draft English language reports on identified topics
  • Support senior staff in the conduct of witness and other interviews
  • Perform any other duties of analysis or collection as required
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
University degree in criminology, Middle Eastern studies, international relations, law, history, political science or related fields.
Languages:
English is the working language of the organization. Arabic native language skills are highly desirable for this position. The incumbent must be able to conduct sight translations and written translations from Arabic into English and vice versa.
Other Skills:
  • Professionalism – Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts, and approaches relating to Sexual and Gender Based Violence in armed conflicts; understanding of and involvement in the interviewing and debriefing of potential victims of Sexual and Gender Based violence, experience in large scale analysis and research tasks, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including ability to identify and participate in the resolution of issues/problems; familiarity with and experience in the use of research methodologies and sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet, and other databases; ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given; ability to plan own work and manage conflicting priorities
  • Communication – good (spoken and written) communication skills, including the ability to draft/edit a variety of written reports, studies and other communications, and to articulate ideas in a clear, concise style
  • Technology Awareness – fully proficient computer skills
  • Teamwork – good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for gender and diversity
  • Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality and security
Other Requirements:
  • Ability to work and live in the EU
  • Valid passport
  • Ability to frequently travel to the assigned location relevant to the program, if needed
