ID - Independent Diplomat

Independent Diplomat (ID), a unique non-profit in the world of diplomacy, is seeking an experienced diplomat to reinforce its Brussels office, support ID's clients in Europe, and contribute to its strategic thinking.

Job Purpose

To (a) provide high-quality support to ID's projects in Europe and represent ID to European institutions and governments, at a senior level; (b) enable ID clients to engage more assertively, consistently, and strategically with the European Union institutions, EU member states, NATO, European media, and the EU think tank community; and (c) assist with new client development and sources of funding in Europe.

Job Description

Working in close collaboration with ID's Brussels Director and wider ID team, the EU Representative will:
  • Gather diplomatic intelligence and analyze and report on political developments in EU countries regarding ID clients;
  • Facilitate senior level diplomatic, intergovernmental, parliamentary and media contacts in Brussels/Strasbourg;
  • Draft written advice for clients, including briefs, talking points, media releases, and articles for publication;
  • Contribute to strategy discussions about ID projects;
  • Provide advice on and assist with developing future clients in Europe; and
  • Support ID's efforts to secure more funding from European foundations and governments.
Initially, the role will be heavily focused on support and advice to the Syrian Coalition's representation to the EU. The Syrian Coalition is the primary moderate opposition to the Assad regime and is committed to a political solution to the crisis that delivers a peaceful, pluralistic Syria. ID's EU Representative will need work closely with the Coalition's representative to deliver, for example, new sanctions measures from the EU, further diplomatic recognitions and upgrades, funding, and humanitarian support.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eight years of experience as a diplomat working in the European Union, either in a major national diplomatic service, or the EEAS and its predecessor services, or in international organisations;
  • Established network of official contacts in Brussels among the EU institutions and member states, NATO, and the media;
  • Fluent spoken and written English and French;
  • Willingness to travel;
  • Commitment to Independent Diplomat's mission;
  • EU citizen or individual with current permission to work in the EU.

Skills Required:

Essential:
  • Politically astute and well-versed and experienced in international affairs, in particular intergovernmental diplomacy;
  • Articulate, outgoing and experienced in working in multi-cultural environments;
  • Exceptional analytical and writing skills;
  • Strong IT skills;
  • High energy, creativity, a sense of humour, cultural sensitivity and social tact;
  • Ability to work independently, take the initiative, and think innovatively; and
  • Team worker.
Desirable:
  • Experience of working in the Middle East, preferably the Levant;
  • Spoken Arabic (Levantine or Classical).
