Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Manager

This post provides an exciting opportunity to play a role in the development of commercialisation activities in one of the largest research intensive universities in the Russell Group. The University has around 35 active spinout companies with 7 of those listed on the investment markets in addition to a significant portfolio of technology licences. To accelerate the impact of its leading research the University also manages sizeable proof of market and proof of concept funds.
The University has placed innovation and impact as a key objective in an ambitious strategy and is seeking to expand its commercialisation activities. In line with this we are working to ensure we can fully realise the potential impact of our research by embedding commercialisation support into different stages of our research, impact and innovation cycles.
This is a challenging role requiring an energetic and self-motivated individual with a can-do attitude to assist in the generation, management and commercialisation of University of Leeds Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio. You will have a background in one or more of the following fields; physical sciences, engineering or informatics and an interest in technology-related business development. You will have a flexible approach to work and capable of independent management of broad project portfolios. You will bring strong negotiation, analytical and planning and implementation skills to drive commercial opportunities to a positive outcome. Essential to this role is demonstrating initiative and building effective commercial relationships between internal and external stakeholders. You will use your sound IP knowledge and experience of innovation processes to deliver successful outcomes.
You will have responsibility for IP project identification, commercial due diligence, managing and assessing proof of concepts right through to commercialising the University’s IP portfolio. You will provide expert advice to inform decision-making and will actively support IP protection processes while aligning research outputs with commercial development roadmaps.
You will be expected to undertake continuous professional development to maintain your skills and knowledge in IP management and commercialisation.
Based in the Research and Innovation Service (RIS), you will report to the Senior IP and Commercialisation Manager to assist in the creation of a dynamic environment for innovation and commercialisation activities.
The Research and Innovation Service (RIS) provides central support to research and innovation activities across the University. RIS works in partnership with industry-facing Innovation Sector Hubs and Faculty-based Research and Innovation Offices. The RIS based Innovation Services Team supports the University’s commercialisation and IP activities, provides business and enterprise services and contract review. Two further teams within the central office support Funding Development and Performance, Governance and Operations.
University Grade 8 (£37,756 - £45,053 p.a.)
