Project Summary:
MSI is supporting USAID's recently established Office of Private Capital and Microenterprise (PCM) to build on the Agency's long history of supporting private sector engagement in development, while seeking to promote a new and innovative approach that can catalyze private capital into the development arena. The PCM Office will support USAID's country Missions in effectively and pro-actively engaging private capital providers seeking commercial returns, both local and international, to integrate their expertise and resources into programming in order to maximize development outcomes.
The PCM Office will support this objective via three main areas of work:
  1. Capitalizing investment vehicles seeking commercial returns and development outcomes
  2. Linking and aggregating capital supply and demand to increase mobilization of commercial capital to achieve development objectives
  3. Advising/convening companies, investors, intermediaries, and USAID on topics related to mobilizing commercial capital to achieve development outcomes.
Position Summary:
MSI is seeking 2-3 analysts and researchers with a background in development finance and impact investing to be part of a team supporting the PCM Office's goals and objectives. The analysts and researchers will work with the MSI team, including its senior technical advisors, in carrying out the following tasks:
  1. Describe the landscape of investment instruments and strategies across asset classes and their track record of financial and social performance.
  2. Help the PCM Office determine how to best optimize its impact, taking into account market demand (investor appetite) and development impact
  3. Identify and document examples of successful private investment approaches in sectors relevant to USAID;
  4. Develop metrics and framework that the PCM Office and USAID Missions can use to measure success and track performance
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research (e.g. involve literature reviews, interviews, focus groups and surveys) on a range of asset classes and their impact on development outcomes.
  • Analyze data and provide evidence for development of findings and recommendations for PCM's involvement in supporting private capital investments.
  • Research and help write short case studies on the type of support USAID can provide in different sectors.
  • Support the identification of commonly used impact measures for different types of investments and sectors.
  • Support the development of reports, briefs and other deliverables.
This is not a full-time position, and is not expected to require international travel.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher university degree in business, finance, economics, public policy, statistics, or other relevant field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of impact investing and how to evaluate both financial and development impact.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in finance, policy, international development, philanthropy or related fields.
  • Experience conducting research, including assessments, evaluations, and similar analytic studies.
  • Experience developing analytical tools and products for publication
  • Experience working in field of impact investment
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and excellent interpersonal skills.
