Communications Officer - CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation

CIVICUS is seeking to recruit a Communications Officer to carry out and facilitate effective communications and brand strategies in line with the organisation’s strategic directions and stakeholder needs.

Specific job objectives include:

Undertake communications activities for CIVICUS projects, and participate as a full member in project teams.
Implement the communication strategy, guidelines and templates, ensuring that the CIVICUS brand is reflected in all internal and external communications.
Manage the graphic needs of CIVICUS including undertaking basic graphic design in-house and liaising with external designers
Develop and use innovative tools and promotional material for effective knowledge sharing, lobbying, campaigning, networking and resource mobilisation.
Help CIVICUS to stay abreast of communication opportunities and trends which would benefit the organisation and its stakeholders.
Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders and work to amplify the voices of civil society based on stakeholder needs
Contribute to CIVICUS’ social media activities and guide staff and partners on the use of social media.
Build and maintain external relations with the media and external communications service providers.
Write and/or edit content for communication purposes.
The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, knowledge, skills and work related experience:

A Bachelor’s degree with major subjects in either Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, English or Journalism.
4-6 years demonstrated experience across a range of communications functions (e.g. media, graphic design, marketing, corporate communications) in a non profit organisation or in a commercial setting with an understanding of civil society and the non profit or development sector
Job related knowledge required for this position includes public relations/communications theory, branding and marketing, design and layout, publishing (print and electronic), production of promotional materials, and impact monitoring
Job related skills required for this position include strong English writing skills, editing and proofreading, design and layout (knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite an asset),social media and online communication, MS office productivity tools, time management and project planning. French and/or Spanish language skills would be desirable.

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa.

Start date: as soon as possible

Duration: initially a 2 year contract will be offered.

Job grade: Paterson - C Upper

Salary offered ranges between USD$28 000 – USD$45 500 per annum depending on the level of relevant skills and experience which will determine the person specification deviation. In addition, employee benefits include Risk Insurance and Medical Aid cover. Benefits are fully covered by CIVICUS and do not form part of the salary package quoted.
