Executive Director

The Mountain Institute

Position Summary

The Mountain Institute (TMI) is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and innovative leader. S/he will have a passion for mountain people and places and a strategic vision for tackling the myriad social, economic, cultural, and environmental issues confronting mountain regions and their consequences for downstream communities. TMI is an established organization with a 38-year record of practical results benefiting mountain communities in the Himalayas, the Andes, and North America. Its programs apply proven methods to enhance the conservation of mountain habitats and resources, improve mountain economies, support the sustainability of mountain cultures, and strengthen mountain people’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.

TMI’s next Executive Director will build on this foundation to increase the impact of its programs and to solidify partnerships with key program funders and strategic partners. In addition to supervising TMI’s Program Directors in the U.S., Asia, and South America, s/he will oversee and guide a small headquarters staff that is responsible for overall organizational strategy, unrestricted and program funding, and financial management. S/he will work closely with the Board of Trustees and actively engage its members to realize their full potential as key TMI resources.

The Executive Director will be the public face of TMI to its principal stakeholders and partners with excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate – and sell -- TMI’s unique mission and capabilities. In this role, the Executive Director will create and enhance partnerships with government agencies, international organizations, foundations, and corporations, both in the U.S. and in other countries where TMI operates. In addition, the Executive Director will build alliances with other NGOs that are concerned with the conservation and restoration of mountain ecosystems and with addressing the many challenges facing mountain peoples.

Salary offering for TMI Executive Director is competitive relative to other positions of this nature.

Principal Responsibilities

• Build high-level organizational visibility and relentlessly promote TMI’s reputation as a global voice in protecting mountain communities and ecosystems.
• Working closely with TMI’s Director for Development & Communications and the Trustees, lead and execute a strategy to enhance TMI’s funding, including non-restricted and project/program funding.
• Oversee and support Program Directors and staff in the execution and delivery of all TMI programs, assuming the ultimate responsibility for program effectiveness and accountability – to donors as well as the mountain communities affected by TMI’s efforts.
• Critically measure the effectiveness of TMI programs on an ongoing basis, reporting quantitative and qualitative results objectively to donors and the Trustees. Conduct regular program reviews to capture lessons learned, revise approaches, and improve future results.
• Work closely with the full Board and Board Committees to set TMI strategy, build organizational resources, communicate program activity, and assure financial and professional integrity. Support and give input to the formulation of Board policy and assure staff and program compliance on all policy matters.
• Establish TMI as the preferred place of employment for committed mountain ecology and mountain conservation, culture, climate change, and awareness-building professionals. Lead TMI’s recruiting, training and career development processes for staff professionals. Foster an atmosphere of collegiality, participation, equal opportunity, and merit-based advancement among professional staff.
• Foster open, constructive relationships and communication between TMI headquarters staff, field-based staff and TMI Trustees, sharing ideas, concerns and commitments for our commonly held values and mission objectives.

Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate will be financially literate and familiar with, and favorably known to, the range of organizations that provide significant funding to TMI’s core themes and program areas. S/he will be innovative, resilient and patient to overcome funding challenges in the current economy and to position TMI as the “go to” NGO for and about mountains.

The new Executive Director will be a strategic leader and mentor for TMI’s dedicated staff, and will bring a proven track record running an organization or managing a team. Substantial field experience working in mountain areas is helpful, as it will inform his/her judgment, enhance his or her credibility as TMI’s spokesperson and advocate, and provide a strong basis for most effectively utilizing TMI’s internationally recognized senior staff.

The ideal candidate will have an inclusive, consultative management style and temperament so s/he can work well as a partner with TMI’s Trustees and senior staff. Equally important, as the leader of the organization, s/he must be able to analyze critical issues, evaluate the available options, and implement decisions promptly and efficiently.
