Position: Field Assistant for Water and Sanitation Project

Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR JAPAN) is a non-political and non-profit NGO conducting humanitarian assistance in 14 different countries around the world. AAR JAPAN Southern Sudan Operation is implementing its Public Health Project in Eastern Equatoria State, with its base in Kapoeta. The project is intended to contribute to the safe and sustainable reintegration of returnees, and to the community development through strengthening the capacity of public health infrastructures such as providing safe water and strengthening the capacity for managing these infrastructures within communities in Kapoeta South, Kapoeta North, Lafon and Budi Counties.



Under the direct supervision of Programme Manager and Senior Project Assistant at AAR JAPAN Kapoeta Office, the Field Assistant is expected to carry out the following duties;

1. Assist supervising water project works such as hydrogeological survey, borehole drilling and repair, and construction of the urban water system

2. Assist/take a lead in rehabilitation of broken and dropped-in hand pumps of the boreholes in the project implementation area

3. Assist/take a lead in creating cooperative and harmonious relations with the community as well as government authorities regarding construction of the urban water system
4. Assist in monitoring usage of existing boreholes/urban water system

5. Conduct training and refresher training for the village water committees / village hand-pump mechanics and make suggestions to improve the contents of the trainings
6. Assist in monitoring and provide assistance and guidance to the activities of village water committees / village hand-pump mechanics

7. Collect and compile boreholes data and other data necessary

8. Support implementation of PHAST/CHAST TOT and hygiene education to community members and school children

9. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.



a. Completion of secondary school education, with preferably a certificate of diploma in civil engineering /water engineering or other relevant field
b. At least three years of experience in borehole drilling/maintenance related project, together with sanitation and hygiene promotion in the community with NGOs or other relevant organizations

c. Fluency in local languages (Toposa, Lopit, Pari or Arabic) and good knowledge of written & spoken English are required.

d. Good organizational, interpersonal, communication and training skills and ability to carry out work in an efficient and timely manner
e. Ability to adapt to the changing requirements /environment f. Ability to work independently and as a team member

g. Computer knowledge (MS Word, Excel) is an asset h. Sudanese national
