BACKGROUND
Social Development Direct (www.sddirect.org.uk) is a leading international provider of social development consultancy and research services. SDDirect is based in London and was established in 1999 as a small network of leading independent consultants and researchers committed to working with government and non-governmental organisations to improve the quality and impact of development assistance. We are committed to the eradication of poverty, global inequality and injustice and work with development partners in the north and south to this end. SDDirect is now an international network of over 200 professionals with expertise in social development, gender, human rights, political science, conflict and peace building and governance with an in-house team of 10 social development specialists.
We are looking for motivated self-starters to work as mid to senior level consultants in our office in Central London. These are busy and varied roles with plenty of scope for development. You will provide high-quality consultancy advice to a range of international, government and NGO clients working in international development, particularly in the areas of gender, civil society engagement, conflict, justice or governance. You are likely to be required to travel to developing countries to carry out assignments.
You will also be expected to identify areas of particular interest and keep up-to-date with trends and developments. While you will be expected to have your own portfolio of work, you will also be expected to provide consultancy support in other areas of SDDirect’s work.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
• Undertake desk and field research and consultancy assignments in own area of expertise and across a range of policy/programme areas as part of SDDirect consultancy and research contracts: e.g. gender, social exclusion, urban poverty, justice, human rights, social policy, livelihoods, participation and empowerment, conflict, security and capacity building;
• Participate in sourcing new work and in selection processes; prepare Expressions of Interests, bids and research proposals;
• Build relationships with a variety of clients including government departments (e.g. DFID, FCO and other UK Departments), inter-governmental bodies, international agencies and non-governmental organisations;
• Contribute to company marketing and promotional activities;
• Participate in the strategic development of SDDirect’s work as a core team member;
• Keep up to date with current trends and be responsible for own professional development.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
1. A postgraduate degree related to international social development or related fields
2. A minimum of 7 years work experience in a relevant thematic area, including significant experience in developing countries
3. Experience of working at policy as well as project/programme level
4. Excellent analytical skills
5. Knowledge and experience of working with major donors such as the UK Government Departments, development banks or UN agencies.
6. Ability to prioritise, work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and meet frequent strict deadlines
7. Excellent presentational and communication skills. Particularly clear, concise writing style and experience of writing for particular audiences
8. Demonstrable ability to thrive on team-working
9. Ability and readiness to travel to developing countries
10. Fluency in written and oral English
11. Good IT skills
Desirable
1. Ability to work in at least two UN languages
2. Experience of working with private foundations or the corporate sector
