Accountant Payables - International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development.

ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, and Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

ILRI seeks to recruit Accountant-Payables. The role of the Accountant-Payables is to ensure that the supplier accounts are handled as professionally as possible.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Treasury supervisor, the job holder will
  • Ensure that supplier payments are made in an accurate and timely manner;
  • Ensure that supplier statements are reconciled with the ILRI records and that differences are minimized and clear;
  • Ensure that prepayments are expensed, posted in the stocks ledger or capitalized on timely basis;
  • Carry out monthly bank reconciliations; ensuring reconciling items are promptly addressed;
  • Develop a surprise cash count schedule in liaison with the treasury ;
  • Review petty cash floats as per the surprise cash count schedule & at year end;
  • Keep custody of the finance safe Key;
  • Generating supplier payments;
  • Dispatching of supplier remittance for supplier transfers done;
  • Completion of bank documents for opening of new accounts;
  • Creating the supplier bank details data base in the accounting system;
  • Assist during audits as necessary;
  • Initiate and recommend payment process and/or systems improvements.
Requirements
  • Bachelors in Commerce and CPA (K) or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years relevant working experience in accounting in an international NGO or an international organization.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting software required preferably SUN accounting.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Good personal organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly effective multi-tasking skills, with ability to co-ordinate, prioritize and organize workload and meet deadlines.
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 2-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Job level and salary: This position is job level 2C and starting salary is KES 105,000 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.
