Development Manager

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is seeking a Development Manager to oversee all aspects of private-sector fundraising for the Institute. The Development Manager will coordinate and implement major fundraising campaigns and activities with the goal of building the Institute’s unrestricted assets. This position works closely with and reports to NDI’s Vice President.

The Development Manager will implement a fundraising program by performing the following duties:

  • Develops and implements comprehensive, annual fundraising plan and timeline, to include annual campaign, special appeals, and major gifts program.
  • Works closely with the NDI Board of Directors, Executive Staff and Public Affairs on major fundraising projects and special events.
  • Creates annual Development budget that corresponds with the Institute’s fiscal year and the annual Development plan.
  • Supervises the Development Team staff to implement all aspects of the fundraising strategy.
  • Manage the process of applying for foundation grants, as well as reporting to various donors including foundations, corporations and individuals.
  • Establishes forecasts and evaluations of fundraising potential for each activity and program.
  • Builds and maintains or cultivate and nurture strategic relationships with individuals, alumni, corporations, foundations, and other sources of unrestricted funds.
  • Directs the production, coordination, and utilization of marketing materials.
  • Develops and implements a stewardship program for donors that will include cultivation events, special programs, and a gift-recognition policy.
  • Conceptualizes a planned giving program for incorporation into the Institute’s major gifts initiative.
  • Sets priorities and responsibilities for support staff in order to implement fundraising action plans, gauge results, and determine future courses of action.
  • Works with staff to determine strategic management of the donor database.
  • Assists Special Events Coordinator with the management and implementation of special events.
  • Manages the strategy and content for NDI’s online giving program.
  • Works with NDI regional teams and field offices to identify nontraditional funding sources for NDI programs in need.
  • Coordinates and manages relationship with any independent fundraising consultants.


Experience Required

  • Bachelors degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Eight (8) years overall experience required with a minimum of five (5) years of progressive work experience in political fundraising, public relations, non-profit management or related field, with particular experience working for international organizations, and a minimum of three (3) years of direct management experience, with demonstrated leadership ability
  • Demonstrated experience in successful fundraising, including experience in annual giving and event planning
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge software preferred
  • Established network of top level contacts of major funding sources including individual, corporate, and foundation sectors (preferred)
  • Knowledge of campaign development and planned giving
  • Demonstrated donor and volunteer service techniques or concepts
  • Conceptual skills and analytical capabilities
  • Initiative and creativity
  • Effective and persuasive communications skills to engage staff, Board of Directors, and prospective donors
  • Superior organizational and supervisory skills
  • Knowledge and/or previous work experience with NDI preferred.
