Senior Associate Scientist - Agricultural Economics

Reporting to IRRI’s Impact Assessment and Strategic Planning Specialist, the Senior Associate Scientist will play a key role in a flagship ex post impact assessment of IRRI’s crop genetic improvement activities. The position depends upon knowledge and skills in agricultural economic theory, such as economic surplus analysis of research investments, as well as statistics.

Major accountabilities / Responsibilities
• Procure and process secondary survey datasets to characterize spatial and temporal patterns of adoption of modern varieties of rice in India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines
• In collaboration with rice breeders, identify IRRI genetic content in leading rice varieties and associated traits in each of the above countries
• In collaboration with breeders and modelers, assist in the quantification and modeling of on farm effects associated with IRRI derived traits
• Estimate supply and cost shifts associated with the farm effects of IRRI derived germplasm traits
• Collaborate with trade modelers to model price and area effects of IRRI trait attributable supply and cost shifts
• Write and present research papers at local and international seminars and conferences, workshops and meetings and for publication in journals
• Perform other job-related duties as instructed by supervisor or Head of the Division

Qualification requirements
• Post Graduate Degree or equivalent in Ag Econ, Econ or Statistics
• At least 4 years of relevant experience
• English: Written and Spoken
• Proficiency in the use of econometric and/or statistical analysis; extensive knowledge of economic and impact assessment concepts including economic surplus analysis; skilled in research management, training, and writing
