Director NYU Poly / New York University

The Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP)—an applied science and engineering institute, newly created by NYU as a consortium of world-class universities, global technology corporations, and innovative urban designers— will focus on the challenges that an increasingly urbanized planet will face in the coming decades: how to accommodate more people in cities, safely, prosperously and sustainably.

The consortium seeks a director who will be the inaugural chief academic officer and reports directly to the NYU Provost. She/he will be responsible for setting the research vision for the center, serve the day-to-day needs of the organization, ensure productive collaboration with each partner institution, and leverage the resources of partners and of the larger NYU network to drive innovation. Academic partners of NYU and NYU-Poly—City University of New York, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Toronto, University of Warwick and Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay—house vigorous applied-science and engineering programs with particular strengths in this leading-edge topic of urban systems. CUSP’s founding industrial partners are among the most prominent companies in the world. They include Cisco, IBM, Siemens, Xerox, Consolidated Edison, National Grid, IDEO, ARUP, and AECOM. They bring global experience conceptualizing and commercializing smart city solutions. The research and discoveries of CUSP will position New York City at the vanguard of the emerging economic sector of urban science and engineering.

The director will have specific responsibility for: Articulating a clear vision for the future and mobilizing strategic plans; Growing and leading CUSP’s worldclass research program; Representing CUSP effectively in public relations; Spearheading resource development and fundraising; Developing partnerships with government agencies and other public service organizations; Designing and implementing CUSP’s organizational structure; Coordinating with partner institutions and corporations to bring CUSP to fruition.

At full strength, CUSP will have 50 principal investigators (tenured and tenuretrack faculty, research scientists from the industrial partners), over 400 Master’s students, 100 Ph.D. students, and 30 post-docs. This academic core will spark new technologies, discoveries, and innovations; lead to new businesses and job creation; educate the workforce for the high-tech urban science sector; and position New York City as the world capital of applied urban science.

The preferred candidate will be a visionary permanent leader for CUSP whose record in science, engineering and technology merits holding a named professorship. The director must not only be an accomplished scientist, but also someone who moves at ease in the world of industrial science and realworld engineering.

An earned doctorate or relevant combination of academic and professional achievement in science, engineering and/or technology related fields is required.

A competitive compensation package will be provided to attract outstanding candidates.

Applications should include a detailed resume and a cover letter, as well as preferred contact information, and may be sent to:
