Legal Expert - Land Rights and Mining

In anticipation of new funding, the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) seeks an international legal expert with specific experience on the rights of landholders in the context of large-scale mining. The individual should have comparative understanding of regulatory frameworks addressing this issue, particularly in Africa, and be in a position to assist civil society organizations in making concrete recommendations for appropriate legislative and policy reforms. Specific experience in legislative drafting is an asset.

This would be a short-term consultancy. If funding is secured for this position, the ideal candidate must be available to deploy to Africa on short notice for two to three weeks possibly by February 20, and should be available to provide limited off-site support to local partners upon his/her return.

Qualifications:

Education: JD or equivalent required

Work Experience: Previous international experience working on rights of landholders in the context of large-scale mining. Specific experience training civil society organizations and/or governmental institutions is a plus.

Language Skills: Fluency in French and English
