Project Manager, Malaria Vaccine Initiative PATH

The PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) is a focused vaccine development program created in 1999 through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The MVI mission is to accelerate the development of promising malaria vaccines and ensure their availability and accessibility in the developing world. To accomplish the first part of its mission, MVI is identifying the most promising vaccines and technologies and implementing targeted partnerships with scientists, vaccinologists, and development projects. MVI works to link government, industry, and academia partners with field trial sites in malaria endemic countries as early as feasible in the development process. The Project Manager will be responsible for:

  • Developing and tracking project timelines and deliverables with input from Functional Unit Head and other staff.
  • Developing comprehensive tracking system for requesting and coordinating resources from various units in support of translational projects.
  • Assisting Director Portfolio Management and Translational Projects in monitoring and tracking portfolio of projects and evaluate risks to the program.
  • Monitoring and tracking indicators of success associated with assigned translational projects.
  • Tracking payments, deliverables and expiry for contracts and agreements associated with assigned projects.
  • Scheduling project meetings and assuming responsibility for creation of agendas and minutes.
  • Ensuring project teams’ compliance with PATH and donor policies and guidelines.
Required Skills
  • Project management– hands-on experience managing projects in an industrial setting. Proficiency in Microsoft Project, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
  • Team work - demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based, matrix-structured environment.
  • Organizational skills – must be able to multi-task and manage multiple complex projects.
  • Communications skills – excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail; good memory and ability to capture salient points from technical meetings.
  • Relationship building – strong people management skills necessary to guide partners and consultants; excellent diplomacy skills and good judgment in managing interactions with MVI’s partners.
  • Problem solving skills – ability to identify partner needs and offer guidance and solutions.
  • Willingness to travel – internationally and domestically up to 5 percent.
  • Language – fluency in English required.
Required Experience

Advanced degree with minimum of five years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Hands-on experience in project management in biotechnology required, preferably in vaccine development. Additional experience managing business development and/or regulatory aspects of projects is desired.
