Research Fellow, Household Energy and Energy Access
The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is an independent, international research institute. Its mission is to support decision-making and induce change towards sustainable development around the world by providing integrative knowledge that bridges science and policy in the field of environment and development. With centres in six countries around the world, SEI has organised its work around four overarching themes. The theme Reducing Climate Risk supports the design, development and implementation of effective and equitable strategies for adaptation and mitigation in developing and developed countries. The Managing Environmental Systems theme aims to advance new insights on the interaction between land, air and water resources and their management, and to support policy change taking into consideration social issues such as gender and equity.
To support the implementation of the SEI Strategy 2010–2014, and the work of themes mentioned above, SEI is in the process of developing a Household Energy Programme which encompasses our core research on the socio-economic dimensions of household energy use and analysis of wider energy economies; field pilot studies; outreach and capacity building. SEI is currently looking for a Research Fellow whose work would contribute to the augmentation of this Programme through project engagement and development of new proposals.
Specific Tasks
•Contribute to and coordinate ongoing household energy socioeconomic analyses
•Design and implement collaborative and applied research in the field (e.g. through household energy pilot projects) and publish results in recognized international outlets
•Interact with high-level policymakers and other stakeholders, and represent SEI at key events
•Support policy outreach and communication of SEI’s HHE work (between SEI Centres and externally)
•Lead and contribute to new funding proposals
•Develop active partnerships with organizations and networks (private sector, NGOs, industry associations, etc.) engaged in the field of household energy/energy access
Successful candidate will have M.Sc. or equivalent in a relevant field, plus at least 5 years experience working directly with household energy in the context of developing countries. In addition s/he will have:
•Demonstrated ability to contribute to creative and strategic research and to produce high-quality analytical outputs
•Ability to manage and coordinate multi-partner, multi-country, projects
•Proven track record developing and applying new and innovative approaches to household energy analysis
•Ability to work as part of a team in a multidisciplinary environment
•Strong project development, implementation and management skills
•Spoken and written fluency in English; knowledge of other languages would be an advantage
•Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
•Track record of successful proposal or grant development
•Willingness to travel
The position is available immediately; the appointment will be for a period of two years, with probability of renewal based on mutual interest and the prospect of sustained funding. A standard initial six-month trial period will apply. The successful candidate will be a member of the ‘Bioresources’ group at the Stockholm Centre of SEI.
