Transnational Threats and International Crime Division

Arms Management Project

In January 2012 the ISS launched the Transnational Threats and International Crimes Division (TTIC), with the Arms Management Project (AMP) forming part of this Division. AMP aims to undertake research, inform the debate, and provide technical advice and support to African governments, inter-governmental organisations and civil society entities on arms control and disarmament with a view to implementing international, regional, sub-regional and national arms control and disarmament agreements in Africa.

The successful applicant will be required to undertake and support both desk and field research on conventional and small arms issues including raising awareness of efforts to combat arms proliferation in Africa. This will include conducting interviews with government officials, officials in regional organisations, officials within the security sector, NGOs and academics. The work will also entail facilitating workshops, seminars and conferences, analysis of the arms control sector and participating in the production of material on arms control. The successful applicant will be expected to write detailed reports and conduct regular briefings on small arms related issues.

Requirements

  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant social science discipline such as political science, strategic studies. Proven interest in the work relating to arms management in general and an understanding of regional security issues in Africa will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to undertake networking with the academia, research institutes and security sector actors.
  • Proven research, analytical, writing, and computer (MS Office) skills.
  • Good communication and presentation skills. With a fluency in English. (Communication in Portuguese and or French will be an advantage).
  • A valid driver’s licence, own transport and a willingness to travel

This position is based at the ISS Office in Pretoria (Tshwane), South Africa and will involve substantial travel, mainly within Africa. The position is on a contract basis, subject to annual performance-based review.

Salary: Salary commensurate with ISS internal salary structure.
