Manager, Development, Africa and Madagascar

The Development Manager for the Africa and Madagascar Field Division reports to the Director of Development for the region and works in close coordination with country program leadership and relevant Headquarters staff to fully engage in raising millions of dollars annually from government agencies, private foundations, corporations and individuals in support of Conservation International’s conservation objectives. The Development Manager provides key fundraising assistance, guidance and expertise to the country’s programs of the division and to the Director of Development for the Field Division. There are six country programs in the Africa and Madagascar Field Division: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Liberia, Botswana, and, Madagascar. The Manager works in a team environment to serve a regional need for coordinated fundraising efforts in the Field Division. In addition to being fully engaged in the development functions, the Manager is also responsible for some fundraising and operational work for the country programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Resource Strategy

  • Work with program leadership to design, refine, and implement fundraising strategies.

Donor Identification and Cultivation

  • Identify and research potential donors (individuals, foundations, corporations and governmental entities) and work with regional staff to develop effective cultivation approaches.
  • Work in collaboration with program leadership in the stewardship of donors and prospects.

Fundraising Program Support

  • Support HQ and field staff to:
    • Conduct background research for proposals
    • Establish timelines and track major deadlines for proposals
    • Draft proposal sections as needed and compile annexes
    • Assist in packaging and submitting full concept papers/proposals and budgets
    • Ensure proper sign-offs are obtained on a timely manner
    • Track report deadlines and deliver timely reporting to donors

  • Write, edit, and proofread customized contents for inclusion in proposals, reports, newsletters, factsheets – e.g. technical content, executive summaries, cover letters, project abstracts,
  • Hold proposal post-submission meetings and gather and disseminate lessons learned
  • Work with finance and program staff to ensure timely stewardship and spending of grants.
  • Work with program staff to maintain an e-Room with all fundraising documents, including proposals, reports, factsheets,
  • Assist in developing and keeping an updated unfunded needs list.
  • Fully engage with and participate on the Priority Unfunded Needs Team to ensure that program needs are in line with institutional strategic needs.
  • Represent the region in meetings with internal or external audiences, including donors, and deliver presentations when necessary.
  • Develop communications materials, including PowerPoint presentations and factsheets.

Fundraising and Operational Program Support

  • Participate in the development of internal programmatic documents, including monthly reports, president letter and others as needed.
  • With the Program Coordinator, coordinate incoming grants (deposits, GRF, acknowledgement letter); develop Grant Agreements and Contracts for partners and vendors in the US and submit payment request accordingly, including the process of grant transfer to the region.
  • Provide support to the Program Coordinator with various operational activities, as needed

Working Conditions:

  • This position is based in CI-Headquarters in Arlington, VA
  • Requires approximately 2--3 trips annually to region of focus or other locations related to duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 3-5 years experience in positions of progressively greater responsibilities in international development and fundraising programs
  • Knowledge of conservation/environmental issues, preferably in Africa
  • Excellent management, communication and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Superior writing and editing skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team
  • Ability to work sensitively with a broad range of people and disciplines
  • Capacity to juggle multiple tasks with a high degree of attention to detail
  • Solid computer skills and experience with standard Microsoft Office software
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • This position will not supervise any staff but may represent the region and the Director of Development in meetings with internal or external audiences, including donors, and deliver presentations when necessary.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of and experience in raising funds for conservation in Africa
  • Knowledge of and experience in working in Africa
  • Master’s degree in relevant field (environmental issues, business, or nonprofit management) preferred
  • Other languages including French and/or Spanish is desirable
