The UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. The Strategic Partnerships, Coordination and Intergovernmental Bureau leads and coordinates UN Women’s implementation of its system-wide and interagency mandates and functions. Central to this is the operationalization of the intergovernmental mandate expressed in its founding resolution in which the UN’s General Assembly decided that UN Women will “lead, coordinate and promote the accountability of the United Nations system in its work on gender equality and the empowerment of women” at the global, regional and country levels. The Coordination Adviser reports to the Director of the UN System Coordination Division of the Strategic Partnerships, Coordination and Intergovernmental Bureau of UN Women who provides overall strategic direction, guidance and oversight. The Adviser is responsible for implementing UN Women’s Coordination Strategy as it pertains to the UN System’s operational activities for development. S\he will work to enhance the coherence of the UN System’s work, to facilitate the mobilization of joint action, and to promote accountability, for the UN System’s work on gender equality and the empowerment of women, including supporting the use and development of accountability frameworks. |
Duties and Responsibilities |

Management of UN Women’s role in United Nations system coordination of operational activities for development - Support application of a gender perspective in the design and implementation of UNDAFs, Common Country Programmes, Action Plans, etc. through systemic policy direction and support.
- Support UN Women’s participation in UNDG interagency mechanisms to secure system-wide policies that promote gender equality and the empowerment of women in the operational work of the UN system.
- Liaise with Regional UNDGs, UN Women Regional Centres and UN Women regional Coordination Specialists with a view to mobilize and sustain joint interagency action at the regional level.
- Provide guidance to gender theme groups (GTGs) and other gender groups based on the work of the UNDG Task Team on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Engaging with coordination mechanisms - Support the Division’s Director to identify new and emerging coordination issues affecting the UN’s operational work to advance gender equality that require system-wide attention.
- Develop UN Women’s strategic inputs to UN system reform processes, including the Delivering as One, System-wide Coherence, etc.
- Support the UNDG on behalf of UN Women.
- Support the participation of relevant UN Women senior officials in UNDG meetings, in liaison with relevant UN Women organizational units, including drafting briefing notes and documents as necessary.
- Coordinate and ensure submission of substantive inputs by UN Women to interagency reports, policy papers and guidance notes related to UNDG work and operational activities, including collaboration with inter-agency working groups and ensuring UN Women representation and value-added contributions where necessary and appropriate.
Accountability for gender mainstreaming - Support the dialogue with experts across the UN system to generate cross-system standard approaches, and develop training/guidance materials applicable to operational activities.
- Lead, promote and support the use of UN Country Team Performance Indicators, Gender Score Cards, Gender Audits and other instruments to promote accountability for system-wide and interagency work on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
- Support the implementation and further development of system-wide accountability frameworks, including results-based frameworks.
Promote, support and monitor development of capacity for coordinating work on gender equality and the empowerment of women - Develop UN training programmes on gender mainstreaming for UN entities including UNCTs, in collaboration with the UNDG and DOCO.
- Coordinate in the formulation of guidance notes on gender mainstreaming in the CCA/UNDAF and on the review of the guidance package for UN GTGs.
- Support the work of the UN Women Training Centre in relation to capacity development initiatives for all UN staff.
- Lead capacity development initiatives for UN Women staff in HQ and in the field on UN system coordination for gender equality and the empowerment of women.
- Lead in the maintenance and development of knowledge management products as required.
Advisory support - Provide advice and guidance to the Director on UN system coordination and leadership and overall strategic and policy issues affecting UN Women and its direction and operations.
- Provide advice to other divisions in UN Women on coordination issues as appropriate
Impact of Results The Coordination Adviser impacts on the efforts to develop and oversee the implementation of the strategy for UN Women’s role to “lead, coordinate and promote the accountability of the United Nations system in its work on gender equality and the empowerment of women” at Global, regional and Country level. The Adviser, impacts on the efficiency and efficacy of UN Women operations and service in UN Women initiatives and activities through the provision of effective intellectual and professional leadership for overall strategy, quality, delivery and results. |

Required Skills and Experience |
Education: - Master’s degree or equivalent in one or more of the following disciplines: gender issues, social sciences, economics, or other related fields.
Experience: - Over 10 years of experience that combines strategic and managerial leadership in administration, business management, planning and operations in a large international and/or corporate organization.
- Experience in the UN Common System required.
Language Requirements: - Written and oral proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of the other UN working knowledge is desirable.
