Stellenbosch University is a research-directed institution which aims to produce graduates with qualifications that are internationally recognised and who are equipped with the skills to address the challenges of the 21st century.

In order to meet the challenges of the 21st century, the University seeks to appoint a Vice-Rector: Learning & Teaching, equipped with the vision, scholarship and international standing as academic to expand the University’s knowledge base, ensure accelerated diversification of the University’s staff as well as student corps, improve the already high level of student success and provide appropriate guidance in eliminating educational shortfalls.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Rector, the Vice-Rector: Learning & Teaching is the academic leader specifically responsible for inter alia managing the learning and teaching functions of the University. This includes: teaching policy development and programmes and quality assurance; diversifying the student corps; enrolment planning and management; institutional research, planning and management; e-learning and e-teaching relating to appropriate learning and teaching paradigms and accessible technology; internationalising the learning and teaching platform; language development and management. A further very important responsibility is innovation relating to learning and teaching in the 21st century. The incumbent also assumes responsibility for academic planning, as well as additional functions assigned to him/her by the Rector.

As a member of the executive management team, the incumbent is co-responsible for establishing, maintaining and achieving the University’s vision, mission, values and goals, and for establishing synergy between research, teaching and community interaction.

Requirements:

· Acknowledged academic standing and the ability to take dynamic and effective academic leadership;
· Expertise in the field of learning and teaching;
· Proven strategic and academic planning and implementation abilities;
· Experience as a senior leader in an academic institution;
· A solid understanding of the South African higher education system, as well as the national and international realities of this sector;
· The ability to develop and maintain appropriate national and international partnerships and alliances;
· Excellent communication skills;
· Proven ability to motivate others in pursuit of a common goal;
· The ability to contribute to institutional redress through the accelerated diversification of the staff and the student corps;
· The ability to function effectively within the multilingual and multicultural environment of Stellenbosch University;
· A Doctorate;
· Eligibility for appointment as Professor at Stellenbosch University.

Recommendations:


· The ability to communicate effectively in both Afrikaans and English;
· Proven experience in innovation in the field of learning and teaching (e.g. e-learning);
· Knowledge of an additional South African language.

Term of office: To be determined by the University Council. Normally it is a term of five years with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term

Remuneration: As determined by the Human Resources Committee of the University Council, with consideration of institutional and national guidelines and trends

Commencement of duties: 1 August 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter
