Associate Director - Program in Environment and Resources

Program Overview

The Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) is a graduate degree program at Stanford that trains the next generation of scholars and leaders in finding solutions to real-world environment and sustainability problems. 

E-IPER is comprised of approximately 35 PhD students, 50 joint MS students from the Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, and nearly 100 affiliated faculty from all seven school at Stanford. E-IPER students engage in cutting edge interdisciplinary research and innovative capstone projects covering a range of topics and approaches. The program attracts highly motivated students with significant professional experience and achievements from all over the world, creating a vibrant and exciting community at Stanford. 

Position Summary

The Associate Director serves as the chief academic staff officer of the program and has overall program management responsibility. The Associate Director works closely with the faculty director and faculty Executive Committee on program and curriculum development as well as strategic planning. In addition, the Associate Director supervises and works closely with two program staff members and also collaborates with other School of Earth Sciences colleagues to ensure effective management of the program. This position reports to the E-IPER Faculty Director, with a dotted-line report to the Senior Associate Dean in the School of Earth Sciences. 

Responsibilities

Academic
• Work with faculty director and executive committee in leading the implementation of E-IPER’s new strategic plan over the next two years
• Serve as program advisor to all PhD students, providing individual guidance and ensuring they are making appropriate degree progress 
• Work closely with and engage faculty to ensure that E-IPER’s courses, requirements, and admissions meet Stanford’s highest academic standards
• Foster the development of new courses, workshops and seminars, and provide professional development opportunities for students
• Oversee the PhD admissions process, and serve on the admissions committee
• Oversee management of the joint MS degree program
• Build relationships with alumni and expand alumni network
• Prepare reports and presentations as needed for donors and oversight committees
• Collaborate with other programs within and beyond Stanford University to develop E-IPER as a hub for interdisciplinary graduate environmental education

Finance and Administration
• Lead E-IPER’s communication efforts, including oversight of and content development for the website, quarterly newsletter, presentations and print materials
• Provide financial oversight for program budget of nearly $2M
• Engage in fundraising efforts and donor stewardship activities
• Manage a small, highly collaborative team and help individual staff develop professionally
• Serve as primary liaison to key University offices and programs such as the Committee on Graduate Studies, the Faculty Senate, the Vice Provost for Graduate Education, the Woods Institute for the Environment, and others
• Represent E-IPER as appropriate on committees in the School of Earth Sciences, the Woods Institute and other university groups
• Lead E-IPER’s response to periodic program reviews and planning exercises within Stanford

Qualifications

• PhD in a related subject area, or equivalent experience
• 5-7 years of relevant program management/development experience
• Knowledge of academic management is critical, with ability to solve problems in a creative way that aligns with the goals of the program
• Experience effectively mentoring, advising, and counseling graduate students
• Exceptionally strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students and to build strong relationships with all groups
• Strong leadership skills, and ability to encourage and facilitate faculty participation
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative teaching programs
• Experience in fundraising, curriculum development and teaching, and recruiting/outreach activities is desired
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
