Stanford Medicine, which comprises Stanford University Medical School – a premier research-intensive medical school – and Stanford Hospitals and Clinics – nationally recognized for quality patient care and leading-edge technology – seeks an marketing and media professional. This position will support and enhance the success of the Campaign for Stanford Medicine during an exciting time of change, expansion and revitalization. 

In December 2011, Stanford concluded its $4.3 billion university-wide campaign, The Stanford Challenge. Approximately $1.2 billion of which has been raised for Stanford Medicine priorities. At the same time, Stanford Medicine is laying the groundwork for a new philanthropic effort anticipated to be in the range of $1.5 billion. 

Position Summary

The Director of Marketing & Media will lead planning and execution of a marketing communications strategy that inspires philanthropic support of Stanford Medicine. Employing the traditional tools of marketing communications, new and emerging media, and the power of Stanford’s clinical enterprise as a portal to community support, the Director will build a strategic program to enhance fundraising with established audiences, and reach out to non-traditional ones. The Director will manage external contractors and vendors, and leverage relationships with a wide variety of partners and stakeholders across Stanford Medicine and Stanford University. This position reports to the Senior Director of Campaigns & Operations, and may supervise staff.

Major Responsibilities

• Develop an integrated, strategic marketing communications plan in support of the Campaign for Stanford Medicine; builds the image & identity of Stanford Medicine across audiences with high potential for support; and secures the engagement of new donors, volunteers and prospects 
• Working with Senior Director of Campaigns & Operations, Development’s executive team, volunteer leadership, and key personnel of Stanford Hospital and Medical School, set strategic direction for branding and messaging of the Campaign for Stanford Medicine. Manage brand integrity, both visual and rhetorical
• Help set creative vision, and collaborate with MCD colleagues, to disseminate Campaign brand and messaging across all print, web, video and other media 

• Employ the tools of marketing--research, audience analysis & segmentation, identification of communications channels, creative services implementation and tracking/analytics—to promote the goals of the Campaign
• Working with internal stakeholders, plan and execute an information strategy that raises the visibility of philanthropy across the Stanford Medicine and Stanford University 
• Direct media relations for Medical Center Development; working with channel partners in press office and marketing communications to achieve high impact earned media for the Campaign
• Execute innovative print collateral, electronic outreach, and advertising/information campaigns. 
• Work with Senior Director of Campaigns & Operations to service Campaign communications needs of a large field organization, particularly in setting creative vision for individual campaign priorities
• Lead and manage staff
• Hire and manage consultants and vendors
• Track and manage budget; operating plan 

Qualifications

• 4 year college degree or equivalent years of experience
• Additionally, 5 -7 years of directly related experience
• Proven record of innovation, strategic thinking and architecting communications programs that deliver on institutional goals
• Exceptional writing, public speaking and presentation skills. (Writing portfolio will be reviewed in interview process) 
• Experience working with boards and executive-level management teams
• Experience developing high-impact events programming, including speechwriting
• Experience in both content creation and direction of creative services: writing, graphic design/production, public/media/community relations, web communications and video
• Highly responsive to needs of multiple clients across various settings; ability to operate cross-functionally 
• Demonstrated capacities: teamwork, leadership, motivational skills, work ethic, empathy and integrity
