Exciting opportunity for EU nationals to work with the NGO PJKUS and support them to empower the marginalised community of Rangpur District to improve their health situation.
Background
The European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps (EVHAC) is an initiative developed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) of the European Commission.  Volunteers working under the EVHAC project will be placed directly with VSO's partner organisations in Bangladesh or South Sudan and will be supported by VSO offices in each of those countries.
VSO is the world's leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO's high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. VSO has around 1,500 volunteers working with partners in 36 countries.

What does the role involve?

You will be working with the NGO staff as well as the community volunteers on the following responsibilities:
  • Identify and analyse the existing working approach with the community
  • Develop a community-based approach strategy for health activities
  • Build staff capacity on community-based approach to deliver health education in the community
  • Conduct training need assessment of the organizational staff and support in capacity development (facilitation, counselling and motivation, problem solving and analysis leadership)
  • Support youth community volunteers to develop case studies on community learning’s and good practices

Skills, qualifications and experience required

You’ll need to have strong background on public health or social work, with working experience in managing or conducting community-based health activities. It is a must that you have skills in training and facilitation, specifically in using participatory approaches, as well as in reporting/documentation. Good communication and networking skills are also desirable. You are expected to have flexibility to adapt with a changing environment of working with the marginalised community, inclusive and participatory leadership style, and ability to motivate others. This placement will have limited facilities and support however if you have commitment to work with the community and an appetite for adventure this will be the one for you.

You'll be based in Rangpur District which is located in the north-eastern region of Bangladesh, and is one of the old districts. Travel to Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh where VSO office is located takes 8 hours by bus. We’ll ask you to commit 13 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance.
