The candidate should demonstrate experience and enthusiasm for managing a sophisticated scientific team of 20+ PhD and masters level professionals, and demonstrated leadership in a QS-related area of expertise. The new Director will report directly to the Group Director of Global Health, Population & Nutrition (GHPN) and will be a part of the GHPN Senior Management Team. The new Director will have the opportunity to expand QS engagement to additional health and non-health-focused development sectors now available within FHI 360 such as education and economic development. They will be expected to actively help shape a vision for the future that facilitates increased QS support to FHI 360’s expanded portfolio of health-related work domestically as well as implementation science research in our field offices around the world.
Position Description:
Quantitative
Sciences (QS) is an FHI 360 Department integral to the organization’s
mission to generate highest quality “science to improve lives”. FHI 360
is highly experienced in conducting international clinical,
epidemiologic and health-behavioral research, as well as supporting
implementation science, particularly focused on reproductive health,
nutrition, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other infectious
diseases. The QS Department supports this research by providing data
management, analysis, study design consultation and technical assistance
across a range of study types, from consultation regarding data
management or study design to full support for complex, multi-site
clinical trials in support of regulatory approval. The candidate should demonstrate experience and enthusiasm for managing a sophisticated scientific team of 20+ PhD and masters level professionals, and demonstrated leadership in a QS-related area of expertise. - Develops and provides scientific and technical leadership, as well as personnel and budget oversight, in support of department and organizational strategic plan, mission, goals and objectives.
- Interacts effectively with experts across multiple disciplines including clinical, behavioral, and social science research; field-based operational and implementation science research; surveillance; monitoring and evaluation; health systems strengthening; and technical assistance to build local capacity.
- Increases the Department’s involvement in FHI 360’s expanded portfolio of work, including in diverse non-health-focused development sectors and develop capacity in innovative new fields with applicability to FHI 360’s traditional focus.
- Represents FHI 360 at scientific meetings, on scientific panels and in discussions with government sponsors such as USAID, NIH, CDC, as well as private foundations, international organizations, regulatory agencies, and implementing agencies in the field.
- Ensures coordination with other FHI 360 departments and groups to foster collaboration, innovative approaches and technical excellence.
- Assists in grant and proposal preparation and budgets by personal involvement or by assigning QS staff.
Minimum Requirements:
- Personnel management experience with evidence of ability to effectively lead doctoral level professionals, to work effectively and cooperatively with others, share information and ideas, and communicate well within and external to the organization
- In-depth knowledge of data management and statistical principles underlying sound scientific inference; understanding of regulatory requirements affecting data management and analysis conducted in support of drug product or medical device approval
- Familiarity with clinical data base management systems and standard software applications used in health and/or social science research
- Experience leading and contributing to development of grants and other proposals for funding of and implementation of research
- Excellent English written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize and delegate work and projects
- Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as needed, including travel to developing countries.
PhD
in Statistics, Biostatistics, Quantitative Sciences or related field
and 8+ years’ experience, or master’s degree with 15+ years of relevant
experience.
