POSITION SUMMARY

The Marketing Strategy and Research group is responsible for providing the American General leadership team (across a variety of functional roles and responsibilities) with timely, objective, actionable insights and integrated analysis of the competitive and environmental landscape, and marketing trends, strategies, and dynamics that are affecting the company, and the life insurance industry as a whole to proactively drive go-to-market, tactical, innovative and strategic business decisions. In this highly visible key leadership role, you will use your considerable industry and product knowledge to further the capabilities of the research unit to deliver strategic insights needed to better understand the needs of consumers and business owners served by the Life and A&H products marketed by American General.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND INTERFACE

This position reports to the Senior Vice President - Head of Marketing for the American General Life and A&H business and manages a team of 5 marketing research professionals.   This role requires significant interaction with other functional areas including product development, marketing, sales and distribution, legal and compliance.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

•Maintain a strong understanding of competitor Life and A&H products and positioning and provide actionable competitive intelligence by keeping current on competitor strategic shifts, product/feature introductions and marketing materials.

•Manage multiple competitive and market intelligence research projects which include: serving as the key contact with internal/external stakeholders on research initiatives, interface with research suppliers, and maintain responsibility for all competitive, product and market research deliverables.

•Create and maintain comprehensive, holistic tools to help SAFG Distributors compete in Life and A&H product lines including the development of competitive marketing collateral pieces and relevant training presentations.

•Provide periodic competitive and market briefings, relevant news and alerts to sales and senior executives and promote competition-focused briefings and debates among executives.

•Work closely with American General Legal and Compliance teams to understand laws and regulations regarding competitive intelligence gathering and periodically brief executive team on relevant changes in legal and ethical aspects of competitive intelligence gathering.

•Manage a small team and provide functional supervision for research analysts and managers to include: assigning/reviewing work, evaluating employee performance, recommending alternate information sources and assessing the training needs of analysts.

•Actively support the SVP – Head of Marketing to determine objectives and set goals for competitive and market research and recommend an annual research budget for American General.
Position Requirements
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD HAVE:

•5+ years life insurance industry experience with broad understanding of strategy, product, market research and distribution.

•A Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Sciences or Business, MBA preferred.

•Excellent verbal and written communications and strong interpersonal skills.

•Ability to simplify complex concepts and to communicate at all levels of the organization.

•Broad, creative, and innovating thinking and the ability to gather extensive amounts of information and synthesize them in concise reports and presentations.

•Knowledge of technology to manage current infrastructure and envision development of new / innovative competitive tools.

•Possess a combination of diplomatic skill tempered with constructive assertiveness.

•Ability to work collaboratively across multiple functions and expertise in building and maintaining relationships with internal / external stakeholders.
