Director, Queensland Competition Authority

The Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) is an independent statutory authority established in 1997 to promote competition as the basis for enhancing efficiency and growth in Queensland's economy.  Our role is growing.  With a complement of more than 80 staff and a budget in excess of $20 Million, the QCA's traditional function is to ensure that monopoly businesses operating in Queensland, particularly in the provision of key infrastructure, do not abuse their market power through unfair pricing or restrictive access arrangements.
Our responsibilities have expanded significantly over the past 18 months with the addition of the Office of Best Practice Regulation, and more recently, undertaking reviews and inquiries to assist the government to improve the productivity of the Queensland economy.  This position has been created to meet these new challenges, and will bring together aspects of both our traditional regulatory function, and our new responsibilities in the productivity sphere.
The Position
  • Strategic, hands-on leadership of inquiries referred for investigation, across a wide range of industries including established regulated industries
  • Provide practical and credible solutions to complex technical issues
  • Negotiate with senior government officials and regulated entity officers to achieve economically robust outcomes
  • Engage with and influence a broad range of stakeholders
  • Leadership of a high-calibre team of 8 to 20 economists
The Person
  • 15+ years as a practising economist
  • Qualifications in economics, with post graduate or additional qualifications in related disciplines highly regarded
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership and strategic thinking
  • Hands-on project management skills
  • Respected for your technical skills and the ability to relate to a broader, non-technical audience
  • Effective stakeholder and relationship building skills, and the ability to grow these skills in your team
