Purpose of the Position
Under the guidance of the Advocacy and Policy Specialist, the incumbent is responsible for supporting the development of strategies and initiatives to maximize the role and influence of the private sector in advocacy for children's rights, including through global platforms and multi-stakeholder initiatives.
Key Expected Results
The incumbent will contribute to strengthening and supporting advocacy to and with the private sector, including through engagement with business, business associations, foundations, multi-stakeholders platforms and initiatives, UN system partners, internationally recognized institutions, academia and civil society. As a result, the potential contribution of business to UNICEF programmes and advocacy is leveraged, engagement strategies are aligned with UNICEF global strategies and priorities, and private sector engagement across the UN is more aligned. Overall, children's right are advanced through the increased commitments and action of stakeholders to respect and support children's rights.
Key Accountabilities and Duties & Tasks
  • Implementation of private sector advocacy strategy: Manages the development and implementation of a private sector advocacy strategy, in line with UNICEF's overall advocacy priorities, for engaging business to advance children's rights. Develops key messages to engage the private sector in priority advocacy themes. Defines priorities/targets and performance indicators that support the overall Private Sector Engagement work plan. Ensures integration and coherence with UNICEF's Strategic Plan.
  • Partner outreach and engagement: Identifies and maximizes opportunities for private sector advocacy for children's rights with priority strategic UNICEF partners, working closely with the key PFP units and UNICEF Divisions. Identifies and maximizes opportunities for UNICEF engagement in select multi-stakeholder platforms and initiatives involving the private sector, including public-private partnerships. Manages UNICEF's engagement in these initiatives to advance UNICEF's advocacy, programmatic and partnership goals.
  • Advocacy, networking and partnership building: Builds and strengthens strategic partnerships through networking and advocacy with UN system partners, international organizations, civil society and private sector to reinforce cooperation and/or pursue opportunities to advance children's rights, leveraging the value of UNICEF partnerships and collaboration, while preserving the organization's credibility and reputation.
  • Capacity building: Capacity building and coordination with National Committees, headquarters, regional and country offices on engaging in private sector advocacy, including strategies and best practices to approach and engage the private sector to advance national, regional and global advocacy initiatives.Advisory services and technical support: Provides technical support and advice regarding the integration of private sector advocacy strategies into UNICEF planning processes, approaches and work plan. Provides inputs into briefing materials and other communications as needed. Represents UNICEF on the UN Private Sector Focal Points Network, providing inputs into interagency calls, documents and key messages.
  • Research and knowledge management: Facilitates knowledge capture and sharing on good practices related to private sector advocacy, including though internet platforms and regular webinars with National Committees and country offices. Leads on research on the role of the private sector in relation to children and implementing the SDGs.
Qualifications of Successful Candidate
  • An advanced university degree in international development, international relations, social sciences, business or public administration, marketing, communication/external relations or other fields related to the work of UNICEF.
  • A first level university degree in combination with two (2) years additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. .
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional work experience at the national and international levels in advocacy, partnership development and private sector engagement.
  • Training or experience in partnership management an asset.
  • Experience of UNICEF programmes and track record in effectively working with different stakeholders and working on complex, multi-stakeholder partnerships involving the private sector, whether within UN, Government, NGOs or the private sector, would be an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language (preferably French or Spanish) is highly desirable.
